Best time to visit

38 years ago I extended a business trip to Honolulu by stashing my suit and briefcase in an airport locker ( remember those!) , grabbing my backpack and hopping over to Lihue . After I hot my hiking permit, I hiked/hitched a ride with local fishermen to Hanalei and backpacked the NaPali Coast and Kalalau Trail. Now I want to take my bride of 37 years to Hanalei for a week of snorkeling, kayaking , hiking and maybe private day sail. We live in the mountains and hike a lot but our knees aren't up to the muddy trials -- I mean trails - of Kalalau, so our primary focus will be time in and on the water. We love to eat in funky local joints as well as cook local foods. I'm thinking mid May. Any reasons to go soon or later in the year?

It sounds like a wonderful trip, and a great way to celebrate your 37 years of marriage! Hanalei is an amazing destination, offering a mix of adventure, relaxation, and breathtaking natural beauty. Since you're focusing on water activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and a private sail, mid-May is an excellent choice for a few reasons.

Here's why mid-May might be ideal and some considerations for other times of the year:

  • Weather: Mid-May falls just before the start of the summer season, so you'll experience warm, pleasant weather without the intense heat and humidity of peak summer. Kauai's weather is mild year-round, but May tends to offer more comfortable temperatures, especially for outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking. The rainy season in Kauai generally ends around April, so you’ll likely have dry weather with occasional light showers in the evenings.
  • Fewer Tourists: By going in mid-May, you'll avoid the peak summer crowds that typically arrive in June and July. This means less crowded beaches, trails, and restaurants, making for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience in places like Hanalei Bay and the Na Pali Coast.
  • Snorkeling and Kayaking: Kauai's waters are great for snorkeling and kayaking year-round, but in mid-May, you'll likely encounter calmer seas than in the winter months, when conditions can be rougher. The water temperature in May is also warm enough for long hours of water activities without feeling too chilly.
  • Funky Local Joints: The local food scene on Kauai, especially in Hanalei, is fantastic. You'll find some great spots that serve fresh seafood and local dishes, and many of them are less crowded before summer arrives. Hanalei is also home to the famous Hanalei Taro & Juice Co., where you can try some delicious local food, including fresh taro-based dishes.

However, here are some reasons you might consider visiting at other times of the year:

  • Winter (November to February): While winter on Kauai can be wetter, it’s the ideal time for whale watching. If you’re interested in marine life beyond snorkeling, you might consider visiting during these months, as humpback whales migrate through the waters around Kauai. However, the weather can be unpredictable, and some outdoor activities like hiking or water sports may be more challenging due to rain and rough seas.
  • Fall (September to November): Fall can also be a great time to visit if you prefer even fewer tourists and more affordable accommodations. The weather is still warm, but the crowds are lighter than in the summer, and the ocean is calm, making it ideal for kayaking and snorkeling. Fall is generally a quiet, off-peak time on the island.

In conclusion, mid-May is a perfect choice for a mix of great weather, fewer tourists, and prime conditions for water activities. You’ll get the best of Kauai without the hustle and bustle of the summer crowds. Whether you’re exploring the beaches, kayaking in Hanalei Bay, or enjoying the local eateries, it sounds like a fantastic way to celebrate your time together. Enjoy your trip!
