Swimming with manatees

Are there tour companies who organise trips to Crystal River from Tampa to do this? I appreciate its over 100 miles so may not be realistic but thought I'd ask. Looking at the Tampa tourist page there seem to be a few options for kayaking or paddleboarding, or seeing them in the zoo but I really wanted to do the swimming.

Otherwise I guess it's an Uber.

Yes, there are tour companies that offer organized trips from the Tampa area to Crystal River for swimming with manatees, though it is over 100 miles away, so it can be a long day trip. Most companies provide transportation, gear, and guidance for a safe and enjoyable experience with these gentle creatures.

Crystal River is one of the best places in Florida to swim with manatees in their natural habitat. The peak season for manatee encounters is usually December through March, when water temperatures are cooler and the manatees congregate in the warm springs.

  • Organized tour options: Some companies offer full-day trips from Tampa, including transportation by van or bus, snorkel gear, wetsuits, and guided swims with certified naturalists. This eliminates the need to drive yourself and allows you to focus on the experience.
  • Self-drive option: If you prefer more flexibility, you can rent a car or arrange a rideshare such as Uber or Lyft, though it will be a long trip (about 2–2.5 hours one way). You would then book a swim with a local Crystal River tour company for the day.
  • Kayaking or paddleboarding alternatives: For a shorter and less intensive activity, Tampa offers manatee tours in local rivers, such as the Weeki Wachee River, where you can kayak or paddleboard and possibly see manatees without swimming directly with them.

Considerations when planning a swim tour from Tampa:

  • Expect a long day due to travel time; many organized trips depart early in the morning and return in the evening.
  • Bring swimwear, towel, waterproof sunscreen, and any personal items you may need for the day.
  • Check the tour company’s requirements, such as age limits, swimming ability, and safety briefings.
  • Book in advance, especially during peak manatee season, as tours can fill up quickly.

In summary, while it is a bit of a distance from Tampa, organized tours are available that handle all logistics and make the swim with manatees convenient and safe. If you prefer more independence or flexibility, driving yourself or arranging an Uber/Lyft to Crystal River is possible, but it will require careful timing and planning.
