German chocolate cake?
Aloha- I just found out the person we're celebrating a 70th Bday for while on island has a favorite cake type- German chocolate, and in my travels to HI in the past I have not looked for this, but also don't remember seeing it
We're going to be having all sorts of Hawaiian desserts throughout the rest of our stay, but I'd like to have this one for some candle blowing and singing accompaniments one one the nights
can any of you guide me on a place to get this?
Last resort is to get a box cake and make it myself, but I'm not sure hat the rental will have and I'd prefer to just get a couple of pieces rather than deal with a whole cake
we're staying a week in Waikoloa Village but going into the resort beach area nearly daily as well as into Waimea a couple of times. We're also spending 3 nights in Volcano and a full day in Hilo on a Sat
TIA for your input!
Aloha! It’s wonderful that you’re planning to celebrate a 70th birthday with a special German chocolate cake while in Hawaii. While Hawaiian desserts are delightful, German chocolate cake is a unique treat, and it might take a little searching to find it. But don’t worry, there are a few places where you can either find a slice or even get a whole cake made fresh for the occasion. Here’s a guide to help you find that perfect German chocolate cake during your trip to the Big Island.
Places to Look for German Chocolate Cake on the Big Island:
- Sweet Cane Cafe (Waimea): Sweet Cane Cafe in Waimea is known for its baked goods, and they often offer a selection of cakes, including German chocolate cake. It's a good idea to call ahead and inquire if they can make one for you or if they have any available when you’re there.
- Big Island Candies (Kailua-Kona): While they are more famous for their chocolate-dipped treats, Big Island Candies might be able to make a German chocolate cake for you or direct you to a local baker who specializes in cakes. They’re worth checking out while you’re in the Kailua-Kona area.
- Kona's Coffee & Cake Company (Kailua-Kona): This bakery offers a variety of cakes, and they may be able to bake a German chocolate cake or direct you to someone who can. Their custom cakes are highly rated, so it's worth asking if they can accommodate your request.
- The Pineapple Room by Alan Wong (Waikoloa Village): While this restaurant is more known for its fine dining, they offer a selection of decadent desserts. You could inquire about ordering a German chocolate cake in advance. It might be more of a “special request,” so it’s a good idea to plan ahead.
- Kohala Village Bakery (Kohala): Known for its homemade baked goods, this bakery sometimes offers cakes and might be able to make a German chocolate cake. Call ahead to inquire if it’s a possibility during your visit.
- Hilo’s Local Bakeries: If you’re planning to visit Hilo, consider stopping by local spots like the Hilo Bakery & Cafe or Redwater Cafe. Both bakeries offer a wide selection of cakes and pastries, and they may be able to prepare a German chocolate cake if you call in advance. Hilo has several great bakeries that might be able to fulfill this request.
Additional Tips:
- Custom Orders: Many bakeries in Hawaii are open to custom orders, especially if you call a few days in advance. So, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for a small German chocolate cake or a couple of slices.
- Grocery Stores: Some larger grocery stores, such as Safeway or Costco, might offer pre-made cakes or the option to order a custom cake. Check the bakeries inside the stores for availability, and if you need something on short notice, this could be a great backup option.
If All Else Fails – Making It Yourself:
- If you're unable to find a bakery that can fulfill your request, buying a box mix and making it yourself is definitely a feasible option. You can pick up ingredients at a local grocery store (like Safeway in Waikoloa) and make a small batch in your rental. While this may not be as fresh as a bakery-made cake, it’s an easy and satisfying option if you're looking to prepare something special for the celebration.
Overall, with a little planning and calling ahead, you should be able to find a bakery or make a German chocolate cake for the birthday celebration. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and the delicious treats, and have a fantastic time on the Big Island!
