2 Week trip Boston to Washington Via Amtrak

Hi, I’m planning a 2 week trip from Boston to Washington DC via NYC & Philadelphia via Amtrak, we are looking to stop off at cape cod, Newport in RI and picking the Amtrak up in Providence RI, I am looking for some advice regarding public transportation between cape cod/Newport/Providence, we aren’t looking to rent a car but can if we have to, does anyone have any advice? Or any other must see places along that route, we are happy to bypass NYC if needed as have been a few times. Thanks!!

That sounds like a fantastic trip! Traveling from Boston to Washington, DC with stops in Cape Cod, Newport (RI), and Providence sounds like a wonderful way to explore the Northeast. Here’s some advice for public transportation between Cape Cod, Newport, and Providence, as well as a few other suggestions along your route:

Public Transportation Options:

  • Cape Cod to Providence: From Cape Cod, the most convenient way to get to Providence is by taking the Peter Pan Bus Lines, which runs between Hyannis (a central town on Cape Cod) and Providence. The journey typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the route. The buses are comfortable and relatively affordable. You can check schedules and book tickets in advance on the Peter Pan website.
  • Cape Cod to Newport: There isn't a direct public transit route from Cape Cod to Newport, but you can take a bus from Cape Cod to Providence (via Peter Pan Bus), and then transfer to a RI Public Transit bus that connects Providence to Newport. The bus ride from Providence to Newport takes around 1 hour. It’s a simple connection, but you’ll need to plan some time for the transfer.
  • Providence to New York City (if needed): If you decide to bypass NYC but need to go to Providence, you can easily get from Providence to NYC by Amtrak. It’s about a 3.5-hour ride from Providence to Penn Station in NYC, so if you change your mind, this is a comfortable option.
  • Getting around Newport: Once you're in Newport, the city is small enough to get around on foot. However, if you prefer not to walk, you can use the Newport Jitney or local taxis and ride-sharing services. Public buses also serve Newport, but they might not be as frequent as you would like. Consider renting bikes or using scooters for a more convenient way to explore the city.

Must-See Places Along Your Route:

  • Cape Cod: While you’re in Cape Cod, be sure to visit Provincetown for its quirky shops and views of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Also, take a stroll along the Cape Cod Rail Trail or enjoy the charming harbor towns like Chatham.
  • Newport, RI: Newport is a beautiful city known for its mansions, especially the Breakers Mansion and Marble House, which are iconic Gilded Age homes. You should also check out the Cliff Walk, which offers amazing coastal views, and the famous Newport Harbor area.
  • Providence: Providence is known for its vibrant arts scene. Don’t miss the WaterFire (if you're there when it's on), and take time to visit the RISD Museum or stroll through Federal Hill for delicious Italian food. The Roger Williams Park Zoo and botanical gardens are also fun if you're looking for a relaxing day.
  • Philadelphia: Since you’re passing through Philadelphia, you might want to explore the Philadelphia Museum of Art (don’t forget to run up the famous "Rocky steps"), Independence Hall, and the Liberty Bell. Philly is rich in history, and you could spend a day enjoying its sights.

Additional Travel Tips:

  • Make sure to check Amtrak schedules in advance to coordinate your train times with your bus arrivals. The Amtrak Northeast Regional service is an easy and scenic way to travel between Providence, New York, and DC.
  • While you’re in Boston, don’t forget to explore some of the city's historic spots like the Freedom Trail and Harvard Square in Cambridge.
  • If you have time, you could explore Acadia National Park in Maine on your way down the coast, especially if you want to enjoy some outdoor activities in the Northeast.

Overall, this route offers a great balance of culture, history, and natural beauty. Public transportation is doable, and you’ll get to enjoy a variety of experiences in each city you visit. Have a wonderful trip!
