Apgar Visitor Center

Can you park and do hikes from the visitor center there without a timed reservation? Never having been, the government website is very confusing when discussing the system. Thanks in advance!

The Apgar Visitor Center is located on the west side of Glacier National Park, and it’s a great starting point for exploring some of the park’s scenic areas and trails. Regarding your question about parking and hiking, here’s a breakdown:

Parking at Apgar Visitor Center:
Yes, you can park at the Apgar Visitor Center without a timed reservation. However, during peak season (typically mid-June to mid-September), parking can fill up quickly, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. The visitor center is located near the entrance to the park, and there are also additional parking areas around the Apgar Village area, which can be used to access the center.

Hiking from the Visitor Center:
You can definitely access several hikes directly from the Apgar Visitor Center without needing a timed reservation. Some of the more popular hikes in the area include:

  • Apgar Lookout Trail – A challenging 5.6-mile round trip that offers fantastic views of the park.
  • Lake McDonald Trail – A relatively easy 3.2-mile round trip along the shoreline of Lake McDonald.
  • Fish Creek Trail – A moderate hike that explores the forested area and can be extended into other parts of the park.

Timed Entry System:
The timed entry system at Glacier National Park applies to the Going-to-the-Sun Road, not the Apgar Visitor Center. This system, which is in place during the summer months, requires visitors to secure a timed entry pass if they wish to drive along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. However, hiking from Apgar Visitor Center or other areas within the park (excluding the Going-to-the-Sun Road) generally does not require a timed reservation. If you're not planning to drive along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, you do not need to worry about securing a pass for hiking in the Apgar area.

Other Considerations:
Even though you do not need a reservation to park and hike around Apgar, I recommend getting an early start to secure a parking spot, especially during busy periods. If you're planning on hiking during the height of summer, it's always a good idea to check the National Park Service website for any updates on the timed entry system or any road closures, as the conditions can change quickly in Glacier due to weather or wildlife activity.

I hope this clears up any confusion! Enjoy your visit to Glacier National Park!
