Scuba on Kauai?

Hello!

We are deciding where to go a week long trip in Hawaii, between the North Shore Oahu and Kauai. Its been over 10 years since we've been to Kauai and have since been scuba certified, with many dives on the big island and Maui. Were looking for an adventure vacation (hiking in Waimea canyon. We have already done the Kalalau trail) and Scuba is an adventure were really hoping to do. We'd be arriving in Early may, but I've read that summer has more option for scuba diving. is this true? could anyone speak to the quality and possibility of diving in May in Kauai? We'd plan on staying in Hanalei or nearish the north, but well have a car and don't mind a drive to Poipu.

thank you for any insight!

Aloha!

It’s fantastic that you’re planning a return trip to Kauai, and it’s exciting that you’re now certified for scuba diving! Kauai offers some of the most stunning and unique diving spots in Hawaii, and you’ll definitely have a great time exploring underwater. Let’s dive into your questions regarding scuba diving in Kauai in May and other adventure options.

Scuba Diving in Kauai in May: You’re right to note that summer often has more dive options, as the weather is warmer, and conditions are usually more favorable. However, May is still a great time to visit Kauai for scuba diving, as it’s generally a transitional month between winter and summer, and the water tends to be calm during this time. Here’s what you can expect in May:

  • Water Conditions: In May, the water conditions are typically good, with calmer seas and clearer visibility compared to the winter months. Visibility can range from 50 to 100 feet, and temperatures are usually between 74-79°F (23-26°C), which is comfortable for diving.
  • Dive Sites: Kauai offers a variety of dive sites for different levels of experience. The south shore (Poipu) generally has more consistent conditions year-round, with sites like Sheraton Caverns and Koloa Landing. The north shore, near Hanalei, can have more variable conditions, especially in the winter months, but by May, many dive operators should be able to get you out on the water.
  • Marine Life: Kauai is known for its incredible marine life, including sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and colorful tropical fish. If you’re lucky, you may also encounter monk seals or even manta rays. The variety of dive sites, from coral reefs to lava tubes, makes for an exciting and diverse diving experience.
  • Availability: While summer does have more dive options, May is considered the "shoulder season" and still offers plenty of opportunities to dive. It's a great time to avoid the crowds but still enjoy the full range of experiences. However, always check in advance with dive shops for availability and conditions, as some dive sites may still be weather-dependent.

Diving in Poipu vs. Hanalei: Since you’re planning to stay in Hanalei or nearby, it’s good to know that Kauai’s diving is spread out across the island. While the north shore is gorgeous and a great base for hiking in Waimea Canyon and other adventures, the south shore tends to have more consistent dive conditions year-round.

  • North Shore (Hanalei): Dive shops on the north shore are limited, but there are still some excellent dive opportunities, especially in May when the water tends to calm down. The north shore offers more remote and dramatic dive spots, such as the Napali Coast and Na Pali Coast, where you can experience stunning underwater scenery. However, these dives can be more dependent on weather conditions and may not be as consistent as those on the south shore.
  • South Shore (Poipu): The south shore is the more popular choice for consistent diving due to calmer waters and a wider variety of dive shops and services. It’s a bit of a drive from Hanalei, but if you don’t mind the distance, you’ll have access to some amazing dive sites, including the Sheraton Caverns and Koloa Landing, both of which are known for good visibility and rich marine life.

Hiking in Waimea Canyon: Since you’re already planning to hike Waimea Canyon, you’re in for a treat! Waimea Canyon, often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” offers dramatic views, colorful landscapes, and several fantastic hikes. Even though you’ve already done the Kalalau Trail, there are other great options like the Waimea Canyon Trail and the Iliau Nature Loop, both of which offer incredible views and a chance to explore Kauai’s natural beauty up close.

Suggestions for Scuba on Kauai: Here are some dive shops on Kauai that you might want to check out:

  • Kauai Down Under Dive Team (Poipu): One of the best-reviewed shops on the island, they offer guided dives to sites like Koloa Landing and the Sheraton Caverns.
  • Seasport Divers (Poipu): Another highly rated dive shop offering both beginner and advanced diving experiences, including boat dives and shore dives along the southern coast.
  • Blue Dolphin Charters (Hanalei): They offer diving and snorkeling tours, including trips to the famous Na Pali Coast for more adventurous divers looking to explore the area’s underwater caves and wildlife.

Conclusion: May is a good time to visit Kauai for scuba diving, and although summer typically offers more options, you can still expect excellent conditions. Since you’re staying in Hanalei on the north shore, you’ll find some good diving opportunities, but I recommend considering a drive to Poipu on the south shore for more consistent and accessible dive sites. Make sure to book your dives in advance, as spots can fill up quickly, especially as the weather improves. Don’t forget to also enjoy the other adventure activities you’ve planned, like hiking Waimea Canyon—Kauai is truly an adventure lover’s paradise!

Hope this helps, and have an amazing time diving and exploring Kauai!
