4WD for Long Point?

Hi all, it's been ages since I visited the Vineyard and I'm trying to remember -- how bad is the road to Long Point? I'm trying to decide whether to rent a sedan or an SUV for a trip this summer. Thanks!

Long Point is a beautiful and remote spot on Martha's Vineyard, known for its natural beauty and less-developed areas. The road leading to Long Point is a well-maintained dirt road, but it can be a bit bumpy, especially after a period of heavy rain. It’s not a rugged off-road track, but a sedan might have difficulty in certain weather conditions, particularly if there are large puddles or washouts.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding whether to rent a sedan or an SUV for your trip:

  • SUV/4WD: Renting an SUV, especially a 4WD vehicle, would provide more comfort and stability on the dirt roads to Long Point. If you plan to visit after rain or if you want to feel more confident navigating potentially uneven or muddy sections, an SUV might be a safer and more comfortable choice. It’ll also give you more flexibility if you want to explore other areas with similar road conditions.
  • Sedan: A sedan can absolutely make the trip to Long Point, especially if the road conditions are dry and well-maintained. If you're only visiting for a day and not planning to go off-road or venture down any particularly rugged paths, a sedan should suffice. Just keep in mind that you might need to drive more slowly and carefully to avoid any rough patches.
  • Road Conditions: The road to Long Point is not "off-road" in the traditional sense, but it’s still a dirt and gravel path. It can get sandy or muddy depending on the weather, so it’s best to check conditions ahead of time if you're unsure. During dry periods, it’s usually easy enough for most cars to navigate.

In summary, if you're looking for peace of mind and a more comfortable ride, renting an SUV is probably the way to go. However, if you're up for a little adventure and the road conditions are dry, a sedan should work just fine. Either way, you'll enjoy the beauty of Long Point!
