we have been coming to New Orleans twice a year for FQF and Crescent City BBQ Blues Fest...question..if i wanted to come into town on March 2nd, just to watch the BIG PARADES on Monday-Wednesday, i guess by having watched them on TV, on St. Charles...if i dont have a ticket to watch from a "grandstand" ...how early do i need to find a spot?? and where is an ok "spot"..thanks everybody..!

For the big parades during Mardi Gras, particularly on St. Charles Avenue, it's important to get there early if you want a good spot, especially if you don't have a grandstand ticket. The parades are popular, and the crowds grow quickly. Here's a general breakdown of what you can expect and some tips for finding a good spot:

1. How Early to Arrive

For the biggest parades, like the ones on Monday-Wednesday (especially the Endymion, Bacchus, and Orpheus parades), you should aim to arrive at least 3 to 4 hours before the parade starts to secure a prime spot along St. Charles Avenue. The crowds start building early, and by the time the parade kicks off, it will be crowded with people standing, sitting, or even setting up camp for hours beforehand.

2. Best Spots Along St. Charles Avenue

St. Charles Avenue is a great place to catch the parades, and you don’t need a grandstand ticket to enjoy them. Here are a few areas where you can grab a spot:

  • Near Lee Circle: This is one of the main spots for parade-goers and gets quite busy. It's close to many hotels, restaurants, and bars, so you'll find plenty of places to grab food and drinks while you wait.
  • Near the Garden District: Between Jackson and Magazine Streets, the area near the Garden District has fewer crowds but still offers great viewing opportunities. It's a more relaxed location, and you can still get a good view of the parade floats as they pass by.
  • Between St. Charles and Napoleon Avenues: This area tends to be less crowded than the spots closer to Canal Street, but it’s still close enough to see the action. It’s a good option if you want a quieter place without being in the thick of the crowds.
  • Near the Carrollton Area: For a more laid-back experience, you could go to the Carrollton area (the end of the parade route). It’s less crowded, and you'll still be able to enjoy the end of the parade with fewer people around.

3. What to Expect

Since you won’t be in a grandstand area, it’s a good idea to bring some chairs, blankets, or tarps to sit on, as well as some snacks and drinks to keep you comfortable while you wait. Parades can last for hours, so it’s good to be prepared.

4. Tips for Watching the Parade

  • Keep an eye out for the parade schedule, as times can vary depending on the route and day.
  • Bring cash if you’re planning to grab food or drinks from vendors along the route.
  • Be respectful of other parade-goers. People will be there for hours, so keeping your spot and respecting others' space is important.

Enjoy your Mardi Gras experience! The parades on St. Charles Avenue are some of the best, and you’ll have a blast even without a grandstand ticket.
