Daxing or Capital arrival ?
Hi, got a choice of flights into Daxing or Captial both landing at around 5pm. Travelling with my family of 4 but also I’m quite into aviation , any reason to chose one airport over the other?. I also dont want to waste time as I’ll have to clear immigration (new 240hr visa exemption) and get to hotel , thanks
When choosing between Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) and Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), several factors are worth considering, especially since you are traveling with family, interested in aviation, and want to make the most of the 240-hour visa-free transit without losing time.
Airport Overview:
- Beijing Capital International (PEK): The older, well-established airport located northeast of central Beijing. It has three terminals (T1-T3) and handles most international flights. It’s closer to central Beijing (approximately 30–40 minutes to central hotels by taxi or airport express train).
- Beijing Daxing International (PKX): A new, ultra-modern airport south of the city. Designed with impressive architecture (ideal for aviation enthusiasts), it is one of the largest in the world. Travel to central Beijing takes longer, roughly 1–1.5 hours by taxi or airport express train.
Factors to consider for your decision:
- Immigration and Customs: Both airports handle international arrivals and the 240-hour visa-free transit. Daxing is designed for efficiency but is much larger, so walking distances may be longer. Capital has more experienced immigration staff for high passenger volumes, which may speed up processing.
- Travel Time to Hotel: If your hotel is central Beijing, PEK is generally faster and simpler to reach. Daxing, being farther south, adds travel time, which may be significant if arriving at 5 PM and with family.
- Aviation Interest: Daxing is architecturally striking and designed with aviation enthusiasts in mind; the terminal layout, massive roof structure, and automated facilities are impressive to see. PEK offers classic busy airport operations, with more flights and possibly better plane-spotting opportunities from public areas.
- Family Convenience: For a family of four, shorter transfer times and easier logistics are generally preferable. PEK offers more transport options like airport express trains and buses directly to multiple parts of the city, whereas Daxing has fewer express connections.
Summary Recommendation:
- Choose Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) if your priority is minimizing travel time, family convenience, and straightforward access to central Beijing hotels.
- Choose Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) if you are particularly interested in modern airport architecture and aviation design and don’t mind a longer transfer to central Beijing.
Additional Tips:
- At both airports, ensure you have all documents ready for the 240-hour visa-free transit, including onward flight tickets and hotel reservations.
- Evening arrivals (around 5 PM) may mean traffic peaks in Beijing, so allow extra time if taking a taxi from Daxing.
- Consider checking if your domestic flight from Beijing to other cities within China departs from the same airport to avoid extra transfer hassles.
In short, for a family-focused and time-efficient arrival, PEK is generally the better choice, while Daxing is a treat for aviation enthusiasts but comes with longer transfers and walking distances.
