Driver to Mutianyu
Hello,
My wife and I are traveling with our 8months old kid, so I think it is better we go to see the Great Wall with a driver instead of taking a bus or joining an organized tour.
I think we can plan nothing else for that day, as it can be too tiring.
can anyone give me an advice on a driver and an approximate cost to get there, visit and get back?
Thanks in advance
Hiring a private driver to visit Mutianyu Great Wall is a very practical choice, especially when traveling with an infant. It offers flexibility, comfort, and convenience compared to public transport or group tours.
Here are some considerations and recommendations for arranging a driver:
- Cost: A typical round-trip private car from central Beijing to Mutianyu for 4–6 hours usually ranges from 500 to 800 CNY (~50–80 USD), depending on the type of vehicle and whether tolls and parking fees are included. Some drivers may offer half-day or full-day rates.
- Booking options: You can book through local travel agencies, online platforms like Klook or Ctrip, or via WeChat-based car service providers. Many English-speaking drivers cater to foreign tourists.
- Timing: It’s best to leave Beijing in the morning around 8–9 AM to avoid traffic and crowds, spend 2–3 hours at Mutianyu, and return by early afternoon. This way, you avoid the heat and get back with plenty of time to rest, especially with a baby.
- Driver recommendations:
- Search for “Beijing private driver Mutianyu” on WeChat or Trip.com forums; many drivers have verified reviews.
- Some hotels can arrange trusted drivers for guests, which can provide extra reassurance.
- Ensure the driver understands your schedule and your need for a relaxed pace, since you are traveling with an infant.
Additional tips for visiting Mutianyu with a baby:
- Bring a lightweight stroller or baby carrier, as some sections of the Wall are steep.
- Mutianyu is less crowded than Badaling and has cable cars and a toboggan slide down, which makes it easier with young children.
- Pack snacks, water, and sun protection for both adults and the baby.
In summary, hiring a private driver for a half-day trip to Mutianyu is very feasible and convenient, and you can expect to pay roughly 500–800 CNY for the round trip, depending on vehicle and service. Booking via your hotel or a reputable online platform with reviews can give you peace of mind.
