Waikiki transportation to Pearl Harbor

I have my entrance ticket reserved for the USS Arizona and plan to spend a chunk of a day at Pearl Harbor. Not using an all inclusive tour package. Going on my own. Single traveler, 67 years young. What is the suggested way to get to Pearl Harbor from Waikiki area? I do not have a rental car. I can do a bus (if not too strenuous), an Uber or taxi or whatever options there are. Thanks.

Hi there,

Visiting Pearl Harbor from Waikiki on your own is very doable, and there are several transportation options depending on your preferences for comfort, cost, and convenience. Since you’re traveling solo and are 67 years young, here’s a detailed breakdown:

1) Public Bus (TheBus)

TheBus is Honolulu’s public transportation system. It’s the most budget-friendly option, but it can be somewhat time-consuming and may require standing or transferring buses, which could be tiring for a longer trip.

  • Route: Take Route #20 from Waikiki to Aloha Tower Marketplace, then transfer to Route #42 or #20 depending on the schedule to reach Pearl Harbor.
  • Travel Time: Approximately 1–1.5 hours one way.
  • Cost: Around $3 per trip for adults.
  • Pros: Very inexpensive, gives you a local experience.
  • Cons: Multiple transfers, potential for crowded buses, limited flexibility with timing.

2) Uber or Lyft

Rideshare services are convenient and offer door-to-door service without the hassle of transfers. This is a great option if you prefer comfort and flexibility.

  • Travel Time: About 25–30 minutes one way from central Waikiki, depending on traffic.
  • Cost: Roughly $30–$50 one way.
  • Pros: Direct, comfortable, no waiting, can bring small bags or snacks.
  • Cons: More expensive than the bus, but worth it for convenience.

3) Taxi Service

Similar to rideshare but slightly more expensive in most cases. Taxis can be booked in advance or hailed locally.

  • Travel Time: About 25–30 minutes one way.
  • Cost: Around $50 one way, depending on traffic and tip.
  • Pros: Direct and reliable.
  • Cons: Harder to book quickly than Uber/Lyft in some cases, slightly higher cost.

4) Shuttle Services

Some hotels or third-party companies offer shuttles from Waikiki to Pearl Harbor. These are often round-trip and may include reserved parking near the museum entrance.

  • Pros: Convenient, may include some guided info along the way.
  • Cons: Fixed schedules, can be more expensive than rideshare if solo.

Tips for Visiting on Your Own:

  • Arrive early to allow time for parking or check-in, security, and to make the most of the USS Arizona Memorial and other exhibits.
  • Bring a small backpack with water, sunscreen, and light snacks.
  • Check the museum’s website for shuttle availability or parking info if you consider a taxi or rideshare.
  • If mobility is a concern, Uber/Lyft or a hotel shuttle is the least strenuous option.

In summary, the most comfortable and hassle-free way is an Uber or Lyft. Public buses are doable and inexpensive, but a bit more effort and time-consuming. Shuttle services can be convenient but may require booking in advance. Avoid renting a car if you prefer not to drive and worry about parking.

Enjoy your visit to Pearl Harbor — it’s a moving and historically rich experience!
