Recent Thrifty experiences?

I typically book car rentals through Costco, regardless of where I'm traveling. On the Big Island, I've had good experiences with Alamo/Enterprise, and solidly average experience Budget. I'm genuinely on a budget for our upcoming trip. Currently have a Budget booking via Costco, and the rate keeps increasing. The rate with DHCR is significantly lower. Reviews are less than stellar, but we've also talked here often about the fact that at some point, any agency can be spot on ~ or not. Just curious if anyone has recent experience to share.

When it comes to car rentals on the Big Island, experiences with Budget and Thrifty can vary widely depending on the season, fleet availability, and which location you pick up from. Recent travelers have shared a mix of experiences, with many noting that Budget tends to be “average” — meaning the process is generally smooth but occasional issues with vehicle cleanliness, late arrivals, or billing quirks can happen.

DHCR (Dollar/Thrifty Car Rental) often offers lower rates than Costco, but some travelers have noted trade-offs:

  • Customer service can be hit or miss, especially during peak periods.
  • Fleet selection may be limited, and cars may be older or have higher mileage than comparable Budget or Enterprise rentals.
  • Some report a slightly slower pick-up or return process, so timing is important.

Tips from recent users to get the best experience on the Big Island:

  • Book early to lock in lower rates, as last-minute bookings tend to rise significantly.
  • Check for hidden fees: Hawaii taxes, airport surcharges, and insurance coverage can make the final bill higher than the quoted rate.
  • Inspect the car thoroughly at pick-up for scratches, dents, and cleanliness; take photos to avoid disputes later.
  • Consider off-airport locations if available, sometimes saving a small premium and reducing wait times.

Overall, for travelers genuinely on a budget, DHCR can be a reasonable choice if you accept slightly less polished service and possibly older vehicles. Budget via Costco provides a more predictable experience, with the advantage of additional customer service support through Costco should issues arise.

Many recent visitors weigh the price difference against peace of mind: if the savings are substantial, DHCR can be fine, but if the rate gap is small, sticking with Budget or Enterprise may be worth it for reliability and smoother service.
