Recommended books/movies/TV shows before a trip?

Aloha everyone! 5 weeks from today I'll be enjoying my first full day on the Big Island. I'm SO excited! One of the things I like to do before visiting a new place is get in the mood by reading or watching some relevant media about its history or present-day culture. Does anyone have recommendations for books/movies/shows about Hawai'i?

I'm a fan of historical fiction, fiction, detective stories and romcoms. I'd love to start watching and/or reading as I'm getting ready for my trip. I'm particularly interested in books, as I'm already planning to bring several books with me to read on the plane, on the beach, on the lanai of my lodgings, etc.

Aloha! It’s fantastic that you want to immerse yourself in Hawai'i’s history and culture before your trip! There are so many great books, movies, and TV shows that can help set the mood for your time on the Big Island. Here are a few recommendations based on your interests in historical fiction, detective stories, and romcoms.

For books, there are some excellent reads that reflect Hawaii's unique cultural and historical background:

  • The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings This contemporary novel is set on the island of Kauai, but it captures the essence of modern Hawaiian life. It follows a man as he navigates family issues after his wife falls into a coma. It’s a great mix of humor and heartache, with some beautiful depictions of Hawaiian landscapes. It was also adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring George Clooney.
  • Moloka'i by Alan Brennert A deeply moving historical fiction novel that tells the story of a young girl sent to a leprosy colony on the island of Molokai. It offers a glimpse into Hawaii's history, particularly the leprosy outbreak and the impact on the community. It’s an incredible, emotional journey through Hawaiian history.
  • Hawaii by James A. Michener This epic historical novel spans centuries, from the creation of the islands to the arrival of Westerners and their impact on Hawaiian society. It’s a long read, but it’s one of the most comprehensive and well-loved books about Hawaii’s history.
  • On the Road to Hana by Margaret W. McDonald If you're into fiction with a Hawaiian twist, this book combines historical elements with modern-day life, focusing on the iconic Hana Highway on Maui but touching on the broader island culture and heritage.

For TV shows, there are a few that capture the beauty of the islands while also showcasing its culture and history:

  • Hawaii Five-0 This popular reboot of the classic detective series is set on Oahu, but it captures the natural beauty of Hawaii and includes plenty of action and drama. It’s a great mix of modern detective stories and Hawaiian culture.
  • Magnum P.I. If you enjoy detective stories with a bit of nostalgia, this classic series (and its recent reboot) is set in Hawaii. The series showcases the stunning views of the islands while following the adventures of the titular private investigator, Thomas Magnum.
  • North Shore A romantic drama set at a luxury resort on the North Shore of Oahu. It's not as well-known but offers an interesting look at Hawaiian resort life and its characters. Great for fans of light romance and beautiful Hawaiian backdrops.

For films, here are some great options:

  • Jurassic Park While not specifically about Hawaiian culture, much of the film was shot on the island of Kauai, and it showcases the stunning natural beauty of Hawaii’s landscapes. It’s a must-watch for any visitor to the islands.
  • The Way of the Gun If you’re looking for a crime film with a slightly offbeat edge, this movie has scenes filmed in Hawaii. It’s a lesser-known film but worth watching for its gritty, dramatic plot, which contrasts with Hawaii's idyllic scenery.
  • Aloha A romantic comedy set in Hawaii, starring Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone. It’s light-hearted and focuses on a man who returns to Hawaii to oversee a military project, but it’s also filled with beautiful landscapes and local Hawaiian touches.
  • Forgetting Sarah Marshall A romcom set on the island of Oahu, this movie is a fun, light-hearted way to get into the Hawaiian vibe. It’s set at a resort, and while it’s not deeply cultural, it’s hilarious and gives a nice glimpse into the relaxing vibe of Hawaii.

These books, movies, and TV shows should help you get in the right mindset as you count down to your Big Island adventure! I’m sure your time there will be just as unforgettable as the stories you’re reading or watching before you go. Enjoy your trip!
