Every year we usually stay on the Big Island near Kona on Alii Drive for a month.
We always have excellent ocean views and are in proximity to town. So, we can enjoy views from the lanai, morning walks, snorkeling during the day (usually driving there), walking to the shops and restaurants, and enjoying some evening vibes.
This September, we would like to spend one month in Kauai. We have been there once for two weeks in Poipu.
Can you please recommend the area and town in which we should stay?
I tried googling Hanalei or Princeville but didn't get helpful information.
I'd appreciate any piece of advice.
Thank you,
T.
For a month-long stay in Kauai where you want both ocean views and proximity to town amenities, you’ll want to prioritize areas that offer walkability, good beaches, and easy access to restaurants and shops. Kauai is divided into four main regions—North Shore, South Shore, East Coast, and West Coast—each with its own vibe and offerings.
Since you’ve already stayed in Poipu on the South Shore for a shorter visit, and enjoyed it, you might consider exploring the North Shore this time. However, the North Shore is more laid-back and less urban, which can be charming but may not provide as many shops and restaurants within walking distance. The South Shore, particularly Poipu, has the most town conveniences, shopping, and dining options, along with excellent beaches for snorkeling.
Given your preferences—morning walks, easy access to shops and restaurants, snorkeling, and evening vibes—Poipu or Koloa on the South Shore is likely the best choice for a month-long stay. You’ll get the convenience of town living while still being steps or a short drive away from beautiful beaches. If you’re looking for a more tranquil and lush environment, Hanalei or Princeville on the North Shore could be wonderful, but be prepared for more driving and fewer walkable options.
For rentals, consider looking for ocean-view condos or houses in Poipu or Koloa that allow month-long stays. Many properties will have lanais, fully equipped kitchens, and direct beach access or nearby beaches for snorkeling. Booking early is advisable, especially for a longer stay in September, as inventory can be limited.
Ultimately, South Shore (Poipu / Koloa) balances your desire for ocean views, town convenience, and snorkeling opportunities, while North Shore (Hanalei / Princeville) offers stunning scenery and quiet beaches at the cost of fewer amenities within walking distance.
