Best Na Pali sunset cruise? Best Secret Falls Kayak & Hike?

Hello, my husband and I are traveling to Kauai during the last part of October. We are staying in Princeville. We are looking for opinions on some of the tours, specifically the NaPali coast tours and the Secret Falls Kayak/hike tours. In addition, any opinions on must-do, must-see, or must-eat options would also be appreciated. We realize we are too late for reservations at places like Bar Acuda, etc. Thank you in advance!

Kauai in late October is a fantastic time to explore both the Na Pali Coast and Secret Falls, as the weather is usually pleasant and the island less crowded than peak season. Staying in Princeville gives you convenient access to the north shore and many tour operators.

Na Pali Sunset Cruises

The Na Pali Coast is spectacular, and a sunset cruise offers a unique perspective of the cliffs, waterfalls, and sea caves. Here are some points to consider:

  • Blue Dolphin Charters: Known for smaller groups, attentive crew, and excellent sunset views. Snorkeling may be included depending on the trip.
  • Na Pali Catamaran Tours: Offers a smooth sailing experience with spacious decks, often including snacks or drinks. Popular for photography and whale watching if early in the season.
  • Captain Andy’s or Holo Holo Charters: Reliable operators with experienced crews, good for combining scenic views and sometimes snorkeling stops along the coast.

Tip: Book as early as possible for sunset cruises, as they are very popular and fill quickly in October.

Secret Falls Kayak & Hike Tours

Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls) is a highlight for adventure seekers. Kayak/hike tours typically start from the Wailua River and combine kayaking upstream with a short hike to the waterfall.

  • Kayak Kauai Adventures: Offers guided tours with knowledgeable guides, ensuring safety and local insights. The hike is moderate, around 1-2 miles round trip.
  • Kauai Backcountry Adventures: Known for smaller groups and personalized experience. Guides often provide tips for swimming and photography at the falls.
  • Wailua River Valley Kayak Tours: Combines kayaking, hiking, and sometimes a short cultural talk about the area’s history.

Tip: Wear water shoes, bring a swimsuit, and pack a small waterproof bag for essentials. Tours are suitable for moderate fitness levels.

Must-Do, Must-See, Must-Eat Suggestions

  • Must-See: Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”), Hanalei Bay, and Kilauea Lighthouse.
  • Must-Do: Helicopter tour for an aerial view of the Na Pali cliffs and waterfalls, and try the north shore beaches like Tunnels Beach for snorkeling or scenic walks.
  • Must-Eat: Try local plate lunches or poke bowls, visit Hanalei Bread Company for breakfast, and enjoy seafood at a casual spot like The Dolphin in Hanalei. Even if high-end spots are booked, many smaller eateries have excellent local cuisine.

Overall, combining a sunset cruise along the Na Pali Coast with the Secret Falls kayak/hike gives you both scenic beauty and adventure. Adding must-see natural sites and local dining rounds out a memorable Kauai experience.
