food trucks

I recently read an article on food trucks on Kauai and was wondering about one that we used to see at Salt Pond Beach regularly... but the name escapes me. The article I read listed some of the better rated trucks and one that stood out was Tony's Catch. The name and picture of the truck rings a bell...was this by chance the one we used to see at Salt Pond? And maybe still goes ther? Its been 5 years since last being on Kauai but planning a trip next May and would like to find that truck as they has the best fish tacos.

Good question — I checked what I could find recently, and here’s what I learned about and whether it's likely the same food-truck you remember from near Salt Pond Beach Park.

✅ What we *know* about Tony’s Catch (recent info)

  • Tony’s Catch is currently located in Kapaʻa (on the east side of Kauaʻi), at 4-1602 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaa, HI 96746.
  • It has recently gained quite a reputation — in 2025 it was named the #1 food truck in the U.S. by Yelp’s “Top 100 Food Trucks” list. The praise singles out its fish tacos, poke bowls, and other seafood dishes.
  • Many recent reviews highlight its fresh mahi-mahi fish tacos, friendly service, and pleasant outdoor seating near the ocean.

⚠️ What suggests Tony’s Catch may *not* be the one you saw at Salt Pond

  • Multiple recent local sources and Kauaʻi forums refer to a different food truck — — as the one that regularly serves at Salt Pond Beach Park.
  • Tony’s Catch’s listed address (Kapaʻa, Kuhio Highway) is on the east side of the island, which is quite far from Salt Pond (on the south shore). That makes it unlikely they'd routinely set up at Salt Pond unless special-event or relocation happened.
  • As of 2025, Tony’s Catch seems established in Kapaʻa, operating from a fixed food-truck lot rather than rotating among beach parks — so there’s no strong evidence that it still visits Salt Pond regularly.

✅ A more likely match — Rafael’s Aloha Tacos

Based on older food-truck listings for Salt Pond Beach, Rafael’s Aloha Tacos is repeatedly named as the vendor at Salt Pond. Their menu includes island-style fish/shrimp tacos and other casual fare.

🔎 My take (if I were you)

It’s probably not Tony’s Catch that you remember at Salt Pond — more likely it was Rafael’s Aloha Tacos (or another older local truck). If the thing that stuck with you was great fish tacos, that could simply be a shared feature between both trucks — so the memory of “best fish tacos” persists even if the truck has changed.

That said — if you visit Kauaʻi next May, it’s still worth stopping by Tony’s Catch in Kapaʻa. Their fish tacos and poke bowls are among the best-reviewed on the island now, and the atmosphere (ocean-view picnic-table seating) is ideal for a casual lunch or dinner. And if you’d like to revisit Salt Pond, you might check local community postings closer to your travel date to see whether Rafael’s (or another truck) is still doing beach-park shifts. Food-truck schedules on Kauaʻi tend to change over time.
