Hawaii has an “all-hazard” emergency alert system designed to warn residents and visitors about both natural and human-caused emergencies. The system includes over 410 outdoor warning sirens located throughout the state.

These sirens are tested once a month, specifically on the first business day of each month. The monthly tests are routine and help ensure that the system is functioning correctly. During the test, you may hear a loud siren sound, which is a normal procedure and does not indicate an actual emergency.

The emergency alert sirens are intended for a wide range of situations, including:

  • Tsunamis
  • Dam breaches
  • Flooding
  • Fires
  • Volcanic eruptions
  • Terrorist threats
  • Hazardous material incidents

If you hear a siren outside of the scheduled monthly test, it should be treated as a real emergency. In such cases, you should immediately tune into local news, TV stations, or check alerts on your cell phone. These sources will provide instructions and information specific to the situation.

Visitors and residents alike should familiarize themselves with this system and know that the monthly tests are simply a way to maintain readiness. Practicing awareness and “aloha” helps ensure safety in the event of a true emergency.
