Leaving valuables in locked vehicle
I am wondering if it would be safe to leave my phone in the glove box in a rental car. I plan to visit beaches for snorkeling. If it would not be advisable, does anyone have a recommendation for a waterproof pouch that would work for snorkeling? Thank-you
Leaving valuables in a rental car on Maui requires some caution. While thefts are not extremely common, cars are sometimes targeted, especially in tourist areas and popular beach parking lots. A locked glove box can provide some security, but it is not foolproof — thieves often check glove compartments and center consoles. For this reason, many visitors prefer not to leave phones, wallets, or other electronics in the car unattended.
Here are some safer options for managing valuables while snorkeling:
- Waterproof phone pouches / dry bags: These are designed to hold phones and other small valuables while keeping them dry in the water. Look for ones that are fully sealed with a secure locking mechanism and a lanyard to wear around your neck or waist.
- Floating waterproof pouches: Some pouches not only protect from water but also float if dropped, which is ideal for snorkeling.
- Waterproof cases for smartphones: Brands like LifeProof, Optrix, and JOTO make cases that are designed for snorkeling and even light diving (often up to 30 feet).
- Waterproof dry bags for larger items: If you have keys, cash, and small items, a small dry bag can be stashed at the beach in a shaded area or tied to a stationary object. Some beaches have lockers or safe storage facilities nearby, but these are less common in Maui than in other destinations.
Practical tips:
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight; even in a locked glove box, the car should appear empty.
- Consider leaving unnecessary items in a hotel safe rather than in the car.
- If using a waterproof pouch, make sure it is certified for full submersion if you plan to snorkel with it, and test it at home before using in the ocean.
- For peace of mind, some visitors use small portable combination lock boxes that can be anchored to beach chairs or stationary objects while in the water.
In summary, leaving a phone in the glove box is not recommended if you want maximum security. A good waterproof pouch or dry bag, preferably one that floats, is the safest and most practical option for snorkeling on Maui.
