Info for March/April trip to Waikoloa Beach

We are staying at the Marriott Waikoloa beach at the end of March thru first week of April & we’ll have a car. We are so excited & looking for information. Are there any good spots for shore snorkeling around where we are staying (walking or driving). We are interested in seeing waterfalls. Where is the best place to view those? I’ve read to stay out of the waterfall water- is that true or is it safe to enjoy the waterfall? Any happy hour recommendations in the area or can’t miss activities or tips? Thanks so much!!

Staying at the Marriott Waikoloa Beach puts you in a fantastic location on the Kohala Coast, with access to beautiful beaches, snorkeling spots, and some scenic drives for waterfalls. With a car, you’ll have flexibility to explore both the nearby coast and inland areas.

Shore Snorkeling: There are several great options within a short drive or even walking distance depending on your comfort level:

  • Kauna'oa Bay / Mauna Kea Beach: About 10 minutes north by car, this is a beautiful crescent-shaped beach with clear water and lots of reef fish. Excellent for beginner snorkelers.
  • Waikoloa Beach Resort Lagoons: Some smaller, calmer lagoon areas right near your resort are great for kids or those wanting easier snorkeling.
  • Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay): Just south of the resort area, it has a nice sandy beach, calm waters, and reef areas suitable for snorkeling. Rentals for gear are available nearby.

Waterfalls: While most of the Kohala Coast itself doesn’t have large accessible waterfalls, you can take a scenic drive inland to see some of the Big Island’s iconic falls:

  • Akaka Falls State Park: About 1.5 hours from Waikoloa, it has a paved trail and viewing platforms for both Akaka Falls (442 ft) and Kahuna Falls (100 ft). The paths are safe and well-maintained, but swimming at the base is not recommended due to strong currents and slippery rocks.
  • Hi’ilawe Falls in Waipi’o Valley: Accessible via guided tours or a strenuous hike. Swimming is generally not advised due to strong currents in the valley’s streams.

Yes, it’s generally safer to enjoy waterfalls from designated viewing areas. Water currents can be strong and pools at the base can be hazardous. Always check local signs and guidance.

Happy Hour Recommendations: There are some excellent options nearby, especially within Waikoloa Beach Resort and surrounding areas:

  • Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar: Great ocean views and a relaxing happy hour with seafood and cocktails.
  • Lava Lava Beach Club: Directly on the sand, casual vibe, sunset views, and solid pupu plates.
  • Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel (if open for happy hour): Upscale cocktails and small bites with amazing sunset scenery.

Other Tips / Can’t-Miss Activities:

  • Consider a snorkeling tour or manta ray night dive (if interested and comfortable) near Kona for a unique experience.
  • Take a morning or sunset drive along the scenic Kohala Coast for breathtaking ocean views.
  • Explore Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site for history and light hiking.
  • Local farmers’ markets in Waikoloa offer fresh tropical fruit and snacks for picnics or beach days.

Overall, with a car, you’ll have lots of options to balance snorkeling, waterfall sightseeing, and relaxing resort activities. Stick to safe viewing areas for waterfalls and enjoy the calm lagoons and nearby bays for snorkeling. Happy hour at one of the resort’s beachfront restaurants is a lovely way to end the day!
