Family friendly ideas in summer?

Hello everyone! We are going to be in Muskegon this June/July for a few days. Other than the beach does anyone have ideas for family with kids 8yrs and under? Would love ideas of restaurants, coffee shops, fishing ideas and anything family oriented.

Thank you for the info in advance!

It’s great that you’re heading to Muskegon for some summer fun! There are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy with young kids, beyond just the beach. Here are some ideas for restaurants, coffee shops, fishing, and other family-oriented activities:

  • Option 1: Michigan's Adventure – This is a classic family-friendly destination, especially for kids. Michigan's Adventure is a theme park with both water rides and traditional amusement rides. It’s perfect for children aged 8 and under, and there are plenty of attractions like the kiddie rides and water slides.
  • Option 2: Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve – A beautiful spot to explore nature with the family. The preserve has easy walking trails, and you can enjoy birdwatching, hiking, and sometimes fishing (depending on the area). It's a nice way to get outside and explore the local wildlife.
  • Option 3: Hackley and Hume Historic Site – If you’re looking for a bit of local history, this site offers tours of two historic homes that belonged to lumber barons. They have family-friendly tours, and it’s a fun way to learn about the area’s past while keeping kids engaged with hands-on exhibits.
  • Option 4: Muskegon Farmers Market – A great place to visit in the summer. You can grab fresh local produce, try different foods, and enjoy the open-air market atmosphere. Kids can also enjoy the local snacks and sometimes even engage in activities like face painting or arts and crafts.

For restaurants and coffee shops, here are a few options that are perfect for families:

  • Option 1: The Poached Egg – A cozy café known for its breakfast and brunch options, making it a great place for families. It has a relaxed atmosphere, and kids will enjoy the pancakes, waffles, and fresh juices.
  • Option 2: Hobo’s Tavern & Brewery – A laid-back spot for lunch or dinner with a kid-friendly menu and outdoor seating. You can enjoy a meal while relaxing in a family-friendly atmosphere. It’s also a good place for parents to grab a craft beer or two!
  • Option 3: The Coffee Factory – A wonderful local coffee shop with a welcoming vibe. They have excellent coffee, but also serve smoothies and pastries that are perfect for little ones. It’s a good stop if you're looking for something to drink or a snack while out and about.
  • Option 4: Big Apple Bagels – If you’re looking for a quick breakfast or lunch, Big Apple Bagels offers sandwiches, bagels, and other light meals in a casual environment that’s great for families.

When it comes to fishing, Muskegon offers a number of family-friendly spots to enjoy:

  • Option 1: Muskegon State Park – This park offers both fresh and saltwater fishing opportunities, making it a great spot for beginners. There are several lakes and rivers where families can fish from shore or on a small boat.
  • Option 2: Pere Marquette Park – Located along Muskegon Lake, this park has a fishing pier where families can try their luck fishing. It’s a safe area for kids, and you’re likely to catch something like perch or bass.
  • Option 3: Fishing Charters – If you want a guided experience, there are several local fishing charters that offer family-friendly trips. These typically cater to beginners and provide all the gear you need to have a fun day on the water.

Finally, don’t forget to check out the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex, which also offers year-round activities like tubing in the summer months and a chance to try a variety of outdoor sports. It’s an excellent option for kids to burn off energy and have fun!

With all these activities, you’ll have no trouble finding fun things to do with your family in Muskegon this summer!
