Curry Village Pizza Deck Wasps

Last time I stayed in Curry Village was in an August and eating on the pizza deck was a bit of a nightmare because of all the wasps. What is it like at the end of April for that? Is it as bad? Thanks

In Yosemite, wasp activity is highly seasonal. Wasps are cold-blooded, so their activity is closely tied to temperature. In August, the weather is warm, and wasps are at their peak, which explains the problem you experienced on the Curry Village pizza deck.

By the end of April, Yosemite Valley is still relatively cool, with daytime highs usually in the 50s–60s °F (10–20 °C) and nights often near freezing. Because of this, wasp activity is generally minimal at this time. You are very unlikely to encounter large numbers of wasps at outdoor dining areas like the pizza deck.

Additional points to consider:

  • Late April is still early in the season, so most insects, including wasps, have not yet emerged in significant numbers.
  • If the weather happens to be unusually warm for a few days, you might see a few wasps, but nothing like the late summer peak.
  • Rainfall earlier in spring can also reduce insect activity, and April can still be a wetter month in Yosemite.

Practical tips:

  • Feel free to enjoy outdoor dining at Curry Village in late April without much concern for wasps.
  • Still, it’s wise to keep food covered until ready to eat, as a precaution against any early insects.
  • If you are particularly sensitive, choosing a table slightly away from open food areas can further reduce any chance of encountering wasps.

Overall, you should find late April at Curry Village much more pleasant than an August visit regarding wasp activity.
