Yosemite early April

Hi all, hoping you can help me. We will be visiting YNP in April next year. I’m planning our visit now, I expect we should have 2 maybe 3 full days.

My questions - I see Mariposa grove road isn’t open but can we still access Mariposa grove and if so how?

If we wanted to see Vernall falls can we do that?

We are staying at the Ahwahnee, so will be inside the park. Thanks

Hi! Visiting Yosemite in early April is a wonderful experience, though it’s important to note that weather can still be chilly and some higher elevation roads and trails may be snow-covered or icy. Staying at the Ahwahnee gives you a fantastic central location inside the park.

Regarding Mariposa Grove:

  • The main Mariposa Grove Road is usually closed to private vehicles in early April, but the grove itself is still accessible.
  • You can reach Mariposa Grove either by the free park shuttle (if operating) from the South Entrance or by hiking from the parking area near the entrance to the grove. Check current shuttle schedules before your visit, as they can vary depending on snow conditions.
  • The hike from the parking area to the Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree is about 2 miles round trip and relatively easy, giving you access to the most famous sequoias even without driving up the road.

Regarding Vernal Falls:

  • The Mist Trail to Vernal Falls is a popular hike, but in early April, parts of the trail can be icy or wet due to snowmelt. Microspikes or traction devices are recommended if you plan to hike beyond the lower viewpoint.
  • If you prefer a safer option, you can still reach the Vernal Falls footbridge, which provides excellent views of the waterfall without attempting the full ascent. This is a 1.6-mile round-trip walk from the Happy Isles trailhead.
  • The full Mist Trail hike to the top of Vernal Falls is about 3 miles one-way, strenuous, and may not be recommended in early April unless the trail is cleared and you are experienced with potentially icy conditions.

Suggested 2–3 day itinerary while staying at the Ahwahnee:

  • Day 1: Explore Yosemite Valley floor, easy walks to Lower Yosemite Falls, Cook’s Meadow Loop, and scenic spots like Tunnel View and Bridalveil Fall.
  • Day 2: Visit Mariposa Grove using the shuttle or parking area hike, spend time among the giant sequoias. In the afternoon, short valley walks or relax near the Ahwahnee.
  • Day 3 (if available): Attempt the Mist Trail to Vernal Falls footbridge for waterfall views, or enjoy Glacier Point Road for panoramic vistas if accessible at lower elevation, or simply explore more valley highlights depending on weather and trail conditions.

Tips for early April:

  • Dress in layers; mornings and evenings can be quite cold.
  • Check trail conditions daily, as snow and ice can change rapidly.
  • Bring water, snacks, and proper footwear with traction if planning to hike beyond valley floor trails.
  • Arrive early to popular trailheads for parking and quieter experiences.

With 2–3 days, you can comfortably experience the valley highlights, the Mariposa Grove sequoias, and get a taste of Yosemite’s waterfalls while avoiding more strenuous hikes that may be risky in early spring conditions.
