Planning a trip
Hi
I'm planning an out-of-state trip to MT/WY with my teenager and mom. My son is into Cities rather than the outdoorsy stuff so we thought about adding in Bozeman, Missoula and/or Billings. We spent 2 evenings a couple years ago on main street to have dinner after and before our flight into MT but we didn't see much of Bozeman. Is it a good destination for a few days? If yes, what are the top few things to do? If anyone has suggestions on other cool places to visit nearby, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
Bozeman is definitely a great destination, especially if you're looking for a mix of outdoor activities and a vibrant city atmosphere. While it’s well-known for its proximity to outdoor adventures like Yellowstone, it also offers a variety of things to do that can appeal to both city lovers and nature enthusiasts. It’s a growing town with a lively downtown, cool eateries, and unique shopping spots.
Here are some top things to do in Bozeman that might appeal to your son and mom:
- Explore Downtown Bozeman: The heart of Bozeman is its charming Main Street, filled with boutiques, coffee shops, and local restaurants. You can check out places like the Montana Ale Works for great food and local brews or visit the Bozeman Public Library for a quiet afternoon.
- Visit the Museum of the Rockies: This museum is famous for its dinosaur exhibits, including some of the largest collections in the country. It’s definitely a great place to spark curiosity, especially for a teenager interested in history or science.
- Bozeman Hot Springs: If you’re looking for a place to relax, Bozeman Hot Springs is a great spot to unwind with multiple outdoor hot springs and pools. It’s also an easy drive from downtown, making it convenient for a few hours of relaxation.
- Hike to the M: If you’re looking for something more active but still accessible, the hike to the M (a giant whitewashed "M" on the mountain) offers panoramic views of Bozeman and the surrounding area. It’s a short but rewarding hike right from town.
As for nearby cities, Missoula and Billings are also worth considering, especially if you have time for a road trip:
- Missoula: Known for its artsy vibe, Missoula has a quirky downtown area with live music, galleries, and cool cafes. It also has a lovely riverfront area, the Clark Fork River, perfect for walking or biking. It’s about a 3-hour drive west of Bozeman.
- Billings: Billings is Montana’s largest city and is known for its history and culture. It has a fantastic museum scene, including the Moss Mansion and the Western Heritage Center. It’s about a 3-hour drive to the east of Bozeman and offers a bigger city feel with more modern amenities.
- Yellowstone National Park: Though it’s a bit farther, about a 2-hour drive from Bozeman, a trip to Yellowstone is a must for any Montana visitor. It’s one of the most iconic natural parks in the world, and the scenic beauty is unmatched.
Overall, Bozeman makes for an excellent base to explore nearby attractions, with a good balance of city life and access to outdoor adventures. Your son might also enjoy the modern vibe of the downtown and the museums, while your mom can appreciate the scenic beauty and the local history.
