Helicopter tours doors on but not the R44 chopper?

Hi all, I have been reading that the R44 chopper, though used a lot, is not the safest. Is it true the A Star 350 B2-7 is safer due to the winds and is also quieter and has better viewing windows?

Thanks to TA we have chosen to have doors on but are now trying to find the best tour company with the best and safest choppers.

Tour will be booked for the end of May, if that helps!

TIA

When considering a Kauai helicopter tour with doors on, understanding the differences between helicopter models is important for comfort, safety, and viewing experience. The two models you mentioned—the Robinson R44 and the AStar (AS350 B2/B3)—have distinct characteristics.

The Robinson R44 is widely used for sightseeing tours because it is nimble, relatively affordable, and can carry 3-4 passengers. However, it is smaller, has less powerful engines, and is more susceptible to turbulence in strong winds. It is generally safe when operated by experienced pilots, but some travelers perceive it as less stable in variable conditions, particularly on windy days common in Kauai’s mountains and canyons. The R44 has decent visibility but smaller windows, which may limit your photography options if the doors are on.

The Airbus/Eurocopter AStar (AS350 B2/B3) is a larger, turbine-powered helicopter. It handles wind and turbulence more smoothly, is generally quieter, and has larger panoramic windows, offering better viewing opportunities. Its cabin is more spacious, which is helpful when flying with doors on, and it is often preferred for comfort and stability in areas like the Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon.

Regarding safety, both helicopters are operated by licensed tour companies with strict maintenance and pilot requirements. The AStar’s turbine engine provides more power redundancy, and pilots often favor it for higher elevations and stronger winds, but statistically, both models have strong safety records. Choosing a reputable operator with experienced pilots is usually more important than the model itself.

Some well-reviewed Kauai tour companies that operate doors-on flights and use AStar helicopters include:

  • Blue Hawaiian Helicopters – Offers AStar tours with doors on, experienced pilots, and extensive safety protocols.
  • Safari Helicopters – Known for personalized service, doors-on flights, and using AStar helicopters.
  • Island Helicopters Kauai – Smaller operator, doors-on tours, AStar aircraft, with focus on scenic flexibility.

Additional tips:

  • Book early in the morning if possible. Winds tend to be calmer, making for smoother flights and clearer views.
  • Check if the company allows you to select doors-on seating in advance; this can improve your viewing experience.
  • Review each company’s safety record and pilot experience; reviews on TripAdvisor or Google can be helpful.

In summary, the AStar is generally preferred for comfort, stability, and superior viewing on Kauai’s often windy terrain, but the R44 is safe and popular. Focusing on a reputable company with experienced pilots is key to having an enjoyable and safe helicopter experience.
