Going to the sun road entry

We will be leaving the village inn at Apgar Sept 4 and have reservation for the next 3 nights at Rising Sun Motor Inn. Will we need a timed entry pass to travel Going to Sun Rd or will our reservation get us on the road? Thanks

It sounds like you have an exciting trip ahead! To answer your question regarding the timed entry pass for traveling the Going-to-the-Sun Road, here's the information you need:

As of 2023, Glacier National Park implemented a timed entry system for the Going-to-the-Sun Road during the peak summer and early fall months. This system requires visitors to have a timed entry pass to access the road during specific hours, from late June to mid-September. However, since your visit is in early September, the timed entry system will still be in effect until mid-September, but there are some important exceptions for guests with reservations at park lodges.

Regarding your reservation at Rising Sun Motor Inn: Since you have a confirmed reservation for lodging at Rising Sun Motor Inn, you are eligible for access to the Going-to-the-Sun Road, even if the timed entry pass system is in place. Lodging reservations within the park are given priority access to the road. When you check-in at your accommodation, they will provide further guidance on the road access, including any specific times you may need to adhere to. Typically, this means you will not need a separate timed entry pass beyond your reservation.

General Tips:

  • Check for Updates: Since policies can change from year to year, it’s always a good idea to verify current rules on the Glacier National Park website or contact the lodge directly closer to your trip for confirmation of the timed entry system and how it will apply to your stay.
  • Timed Entry Availability: If you plan to visit the park without staying at a lodge or for any additional access (like hiking or special scenic stops), you may need to secure a timed entry pass. These passes typically can be booked in advance, so be sure to check for availability if needed.
  • Plan for Peak Hours: The Going-to-the-Sun Road can be quite busy, so even with access, it’s a good idea to start your drive early in the day to avoid crowds and enjoy the scenic views with fewer people around.

To sum it up, with your reservation at Rising Sun Motor Inn, you should be able to access the Going-to-the-Sun Road without the need for a timed entry pass. Just make sure to follow any specific instructions given at the lodge when you check in. Enjoy your time in Glacier National Park!
