Hikes on the way to Polebridge

We have an extra day in our schedule and may check out lunch at Polebridge and then the Mercantile. Are there any family friendly hikes (3ish miles) on the way from Columbia Falls?

It sounds like you're in for a great day exploring Glacier National Park and the surrounding area! If you're planning to head to Polebridge and the Mercantile, there are a few wonderful family-friendly hikes you can enjoy along the way from Columbia Falls. Here are some options that are around 3 miles or so and suitable for families:

  • Trail of the Cedars – This is an easy, scenic loop trail located near the west entrance to Glacier National Park. It’s a 0.7-mile, wheelchair-accessible hike that meanders through an ancient cedar and spruce forest, offering great views and a chance to explore the lush, shaded woods. While it’s short, you can combine it with the Avalanche Lake Trail (which is about 2 miles) if you want to extend your hike.
  • Lake McDonald to Apgar Village – This is a lovely, 3-mile trail that follows the shoreline of Lake McDonald and ends at Apgar Village, providing a peaceful setting for families. It's a relatively flat trail with plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the view. Along the way, you may also spot wildlife and take in beautiful views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
  • Lower McDonald Creek Trail – A relatively flat and easy 3-mile round trip, this trail provides views of McDonald Creek and leads you through a forested area with views of the nearby mountains. It’s not too strenuous, making it a good option for families looking for a quick, scenic hike.
  • Hidden Lake Trail (Starting from Logan Pass) – While a bit longer than 3 miles, this trail is worth mentioning for those who are up for a longer, yet still family-friendly adventure. The hike to Hidden Lake starts from Logan Pass (about a 45-minute drive from Columbia Falls), and it offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains and alpine wildflowers. The round trip is about 3 miles, but families can turn back whenever they feel like they've seen enough of the stunning scenery. The trail is well-maintained but can be a little steep in places.

As you head toward Polebridge, the main route you'll likely take is going through West Glacier and up to the North Fork Road (a dirt road). Along this scenic route, you’ll pass through forests and fields, and the trailheads are typically marked. Be sure to check in at the visitor center for up-to-date trail conditions and information, especially if you're traveling during the peak season.

After enjoying a hike, heading to Polebridge for some lunch and to check out the Mercantile is a fantastic idea! It's a charming, off-the-beaten-path spot with great pastries and a relaxed atmosphere. Make sure to try their famous huckleberry bear claws!

Hope this helps you plan your adventure! Enjoy your time in Glacier and the amazing hikes along the way to Polebridge!
