Where to stay? Mid May

First timer coming solo to area. Want to check out Amelia Fernadina and stop by PV resort then head to St Augustine. Are there enough restaurants in Fernadina/Amelia. ? Looked at Omni but think I’ll book air bnb with bikes. T

Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach are excellent choices for a first-time solo visitor in mid-May. The weather is usually warm and pleasant, ideal for biking, walking around town, and exploring the beaches.

For accommodation, you have a few options depending on your preference for privacy, amenities, and budget. Booking an Airbnb with bike access is a great idea, as Amelia Island is very bike-friendly and this allows you to explore at your own pace. Staying at the Omni Amelia Island Resort is more luxurious but also more expensive and somewhat isolated from the downtown Fernandina area.

Fernandina Beach itself has a vibrant downtown with enough restaurants, cafes, and bars to satisfy most tastes. You’ll find everything from casual seafood spots to upscale dining. The historic downtown area is walkable, making it easy to explore without a car if your Airbnb is centrally located.

  • Downtown Fernandina Beach Airbnb: Ideal for walking or biking to restaurants, shops, and the waterfront. Plenty of options ranging from historic cottages to modern condos.
  • Omni Amelia Island Resort: Offers full resort amenities, spa, golf, and direct beach access. It’s more resort-focused, so fewer casual dining options nearby, but very comfortable if you want a full-service stay.
  • Other vacation rentals near the beach: Consider rentals near Main Beach Park or the southern end of the island if you want quieter beaches and a shorter ride to PV Resort or other sights.

Since your plan includes stopping by PV Resort and then heading to St. Augustine, staying in central Fernandina or a nearby Airbnb with easy access to A1A is recommended. The drive from Amelia Island to St. Augustine is roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes, so you can comfortably make a day trip or continue your journey.

  • Bringing or renting a bike is recommended — the island has many scenic trails, including the Amelia Island Trail that connects the beaches with the downtown area.
  • Mid-May is not peak tourist season yet, so dining reservations may not be necessary, but popular spots like Salt or The Salty Pelican can get busy on weekends.
  • Consider exploring both the island’s beaches and downtown historic district for a mix of natural beauty and local culture.

In summary, for a solo traveler in mid-May, a downtown Fernandina Beach Airbnb with bikes is likely the best choice for flexibility, proximity to restaurants, and easy access to beaches and the PV Resort. Omni is ideal if you want resort amenities and a more luxurious stay, but you may miss some of the local downtown charm.
