Visiting in July...few questions

Hello, My husband and I are coming to visit while our son will be at the Naval Academy for a wrestling camp. We are staying at the Westin. Our plan is to Uber to and from the airport if.....

By staying at the Westin are we in an area that is walkable to a lot of great places? If not, does the free shuttle or city bus come by this area? OR should we rent a car?

We will be here July 9th-13th. Friday will be spent at the Naval Academy.

It sounds like you have an exciting trip ahead! The Westin in Annapolis is located in a great area, so let me break down your questions:

1. Is the area walkable to a lot of great places? Should you rent a car?

The Westin is in a fairly convenient location, especially for exploring Annapolis' downtown and the waterfront. You’ll find many shops, restaurants, and historical sites within walking distance. The Annapolis Historic District is nearby, making it easy to enjoy the charming cobblestone streets, colonial architecture, and waterfront views. However, if you want to explore areas outside of downtown or if you have limited time, renting a car might be helpful. Alternatively, Uber is an easy way to get around, especially for short trips.

As for public transportation, Annapolis does have a city bus service, but it may not be the most efficient option for tourists compared to walking or Uber. The free shuttle service that runs in the summer, known as the Circulator, is another option to get around, but it’s a bit limited in coverage.

2. Top 3 places to eat in Annapolis?

There are plenty of great dining options in Annapolis, offering everything from fresh seafood to classic American fare. Here are some top choices:

  • Old Ebbitt Grill: A classic seafood and oyster house offering a great ambiance and an iconic menu. It’s a local favorite for crab cakes and other seafood dishes.
  • The Federal House: A charming pub-style restaurant located in the heart of downtown. Known for its great burgers, seafood dishes, and outdoor seating in a historic building.
  • O'Learys Seafood Restaurant: A wonderful spot for fresh Maryland crab, lobster, and oysters, with great views of the water. It’s a more casual but popular dining experience.

3. Top 3 places to see or visit in Annapolis?

There are a number of must-see attractions in Annapolis, especially for history buffs and nature lovers:

  • The United States Naval Academy: A must-see, especially since your son will be there. It’s one of the most prestigious military academies, and you can take guided tours to learn about the history and see the stunning architecture. The Chapel and the Naval Academy Museum are also worth a visit.
  • The Maryland State House: The oldest state house in continuous legislative use in the U.S. You can tour the building and see the beautiful Rotunda, as well as historical exhibits about Maryland’s history.
  • The City Dock & Waterfront: Annapolis is known for its beautiful harbor and the City Dock area is perfect for a leisurely stroll. You can walk around, grab a drink at one of the waterfront bars, or take a boat tour. It’s also great for enjoying the views and relaxing by the water.

In summary, Annapolis offers a fantastic blend of history, dining, and scenic views. You’ll have plenty to explore, and the Westin’s location makes it easy to access many of the top attractions without needing to rent a car. Enjoy your trip!
