Scenic Drives

I already have a couple of threads going, but since this is a separate topic, I started a new one.

To recap, the Mr and I will arrive on Friday, March 21st. We will spend two nights in the Hilton Graduate Hotel. On Sunday night, we will move to a hotel near BWI since we have early morning flights the next day and also need to return our rental car.

Since we have a car, I'd like to include some scenic drives.

Will there be easy access to drive over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge?

Any other suggestions?

Thank you in advance for any insight or information you can share!

It sounds like you’ve got a great trip planned! Annapolis and the surrounding area offer some beautiful scenic drives, perfect for exploring while you have access to a car.

Yes, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is easily accessible from Annapolis, and it's one of the most iconic scenic drives in Maryland. The bridge spans the Chesapeake Bay, connecting the Eastern Shore to the Western Shore of Maryland, and offers stunning views of the bay and its surrounding waters. It's a wonderful drive if you're looking to explore the area further, and you'll enjoy breathtaking views, especially if the weather is nice.

Here are some additional scenic drive suggestions around Annapolis:

  • Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway: This 80-mile route runs from Annapolis to the Eastern Shore and offers some of the best views of the bay, its wildlife, and charming towns like Easton, St. Michaels, and Oxford. Along the way, you’ll pass through rural farmland, forests, and beautiful waterfront areas, perfect for a relaxing drive. If you have time, you might want to stop in St. Michaels for some local seafood or a walk around the charming downtown area.
  • Route 50 to the Eastern Shore: Heading east on US-50 from Annapolis is another scenic route, especially if you’re crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The drive takes you through quaint towns like Cambridge and Easton, offering views of farmland, rivers, and marshlands. It's a great way to experience the rural beauty of Maryland and visit historic towns along the way.
  • South River Scenic Drive: If you want something closer to Annapolis, consider a drive around South River. The drive will take you through rolling hills, forested areas, and lovely waterfront properties. It’s a quieter route compared to others but offers beautiful views of the river and surrounding nature.
  • Western Shore and Scenic Waterfront Drives: On your way from Annapolis to BWI, consider exploring the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay. For instance, you could take a detour along MD-214 toward the Patuxent River and enjoy views of small towns and scenic waterfronts. This route also offers access to a variety of parks, including the Sandy Point State Park, where you can stop for a quick stroll by the water.

As for your accommodation near BWI, there are also some scenic drives in that area as well, particularly towards the outskirts of Baltimore, where you can enjoy views of the Patapsco River and the surrounding parks.

Overall, there’s a lot of beauty to see, and you're in a great location to explore the diverse landscapes of Maryland. I hope you enjoy your scenic drives and have a great time in Annapolis!
