10 days within 4/5 hours of Beijing.

Hi there. We have 9 full days ( and a half day after our flight and a day of a night flight!) so 11ish days! We are flying to Beijing and had hoped to do a few days there, a few in Shanghai and a few in Xian before heading back to Beijing. When planning it though, it seemed we would spend many, many hours on bullet trains!! The new plan is to spend the first few few days touring Beijing and the last few in Xian. In between we would love to explore some places within a few hours of Beijing ( happy to spend a night or longer in them) so we are seeing different places but not spending all our days travelling. We are open to suggestions. We love mountains and nature though in July it will probably too hot to hike. A search has brought up Chengde, Mount Huashan and Quinhuangdao. Any ideas? TIA

With 9–11 days and your preference to stay within 4–5 hours of Beijing, you can enjoy a mix of cultural, historical, and natural attractions without spending excessive time on bullet trains. July can be hot, so prioritize places with shade, water, or higher elevations when possible.

Here are some options for places within 4–5 hours of Beijing that suit your interests:

  • Chengde: Famous for the Mountain Resort (imperial gardens) and numerous temples. About 3–4 hours by train or car from Beijing. The area offers gardens, temples, and forested hills, which are nice for short hikes and sightseeing in summer.
  • Mount Huashan: About 4–5 hours from Beijing by high-speed train to Huayin + local transport. The mountain is famous for its steep cliffs and scenic peaks. While July will be hot, you can take the cable cars to higher peaks to avoid strenuous hiking and still enjoy spectacular views.
  • Qinhuangdao / Shanhaiguan: About 3–4 hours from Beijing by train. You can visit the famous "Old Dragon’s Head" section of the Great Wall where it meets the sea, enjoy the beach, and explore coastal scenery. Good option for a mix of history and nature without intense hiking.
  • Beidaihe: Near Qinhuangdao, a popular seaside resort. Offers beaches and coastal nature, ideal if you want a more relaxed break with water views.
  • Datong: About 3–4 hours by high-speed train. Famous for the Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery. Offers cultural sightseeing rather than hiking but interesting historical sites.
  • Pingyao: Approximately 4–5 hours by train. A well-preserved ancient walled city. Great for history and walking around the old town, less physically demanding but very scenic.

Suggested approach to your itinerary:

  • Spend first 3–4 days in Beijing exploring key sites: Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Great Wall at Mutianyu or Jinshanling.
  • Take a 2-day trip to Mount Huashan or Chengde (overnight stay recommended for convenience and to avoid rushed travel).
  • Return to Beijing for 1 night if needed, then take a high-speed train to Xi’an for 2–3 days (Terra Cotta Warriors, Ancient City Wall, Muslim Quarter).
  • Fly back to Beijing for departure, using your half-day or night flight efficiently.

Tips for summer travel:

  • Start sightseeing early in the morning to avoid midday heat.
  • Use cable cars or shuttle buses for mountain trips to minimize hiking in hot weather.
  • Carry water, sunscreen, and hats for protection from the sun.
  • Book trains and hotels in advance, especially for high-speed trains and popular tourist cities.

This plan balances cultural exploration, light nature and mountain experiences, and minimizes travel fatigue, while keeping all destinations within a manageable distance from Beijing.
