Funny Little Question

Hello, we will be in the area for a month this winter. Last year, we visited Tarpon Springs on our way to Clearwater. What a sweet little town. We bought some great sponges and ate the most delish Pastitsio. There was a bakery attached to the restaurant and I bought some baklava to take with. I was so disappointed because it seems it was made with corn syrup rather than real honey.

So question, where can I get authentic baklava made with honey? Thanks!

Tarpon Springs is famous for its Greek community and authentic Mediterranean treats, so finding baklava made with real honey is definitely possible if you know where to look. Many of the tourist-focused bakeries use corn syrup for convenience, but some local bakeries and Greek markets maintain traditional recipes using honey.

Here are some recommended options in and around Tarpon Springs:

  • Hellas Bakery & Deli: A local favorite for traditional Greek pastries. They make baklava using honey and often have it freshly baked. Ask if the batch is made with real honey when purchasing, as they sometimes prepare small batches with traditional recipes.
  • Yanni’s Greek Restaurant & Bakery: Known for their authentic desserts, including baklava made with honey. This is a great spot if you want to enjoy a pastry along with a meal.
  • Panagia Bakery (or local Greek markets in the area): Smaller Greek markets often carry authentic honey baklava. Look for those with locally made products rather than mass-produced sweets.

If you’re willing to drive a short distance outside Tarpon Springs, nearby areas like Clearwater and Dunedin also have Greek bakeries that specialize in honey baklava. Sometimes calling ahead to ask about ingredients ensures you get exactly what you want.

Tip: When buying baklava, check the label or ask if the syrup is honey-based. Traditional baklava should have a sweet, slightly floral flavor from the honey, not the overly sweet taste of corn syrup.
