Mono Lake

I'm in the very early stages of trip planning for 5 or 6 nights in the Yosemite area in July, August, or September. We were there many years ago and know how beautiful it is.

I'd like to visit Mono Lake. Would it be best to stay in that area for a night or two? I saw another post that said Mono Lake is best at sunrise and sunset. Is there enough to do, or would it be best to head back to Yosemite? Any recommendations for hotels in Lee Vining, June Lake, or Mammoth? I'm a little picky about hotels, and the ones in Mammoth look nicer.

Visiting Mono Lake can definitely be a highlight of a trip to the Yosemite area, especially if you enjoy unique natural landscapes and photography. Since Mono Lake is particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset, staying nearby for at least one night is ideal if you want to fully experience it. Otherwise, you would need an early morning drive from Yosemite or Mammoth to catch the light at its best.

Mono Lake itself is relatively small in terms of activities, but the main attractions are the tufa towers, scenic viewpoints, and walking along the shoreline. It’s also a good spot for birdwatching and nature photography. While you can do a day trip from Yosemite or Mammoth, the experience is richer with an overnight stay.

Accommodation options:

  • Lee Vining: Closest town to Mono Lake. Small with limited options, but practical for sunrise/sunset photography. Recommended for a simple, convenient stop. Options include motel-style lodgings, and a few boutique inns.
  • June Lake: Slightly farther south and offers a charming mountain town atmosphere. It’s scenic, has more dining options, and still allows an easy drive to Mono Lake for sunset or sunrise.
  • Mammoth Lakes: Larger town with upscale hotels, nicer amenities, and more dining and shopping options. It’s about a 30–40 minute drive to Mono Lake. Best choice if you prefer comfort and don’t mind the daily drive to catch sunrise or sunset.

Recommendations based on priorities:

  • If capturing Mono Lake at sunrise and sunset is a top priority, stay at Lee Vining for at least one night.
  • If you want a balance of comfort and scenery, consider staying in Mammoth Lakes and making early morning/late afternoon trips to Mono Lake.
  • June Lake is a middle ground with scenic surroundings and a more intimate town feel than Mammoth.

Overall, whether to stay near Mono Lake or head back to Yosemite depends on how much you want to prioritize the lake itself versus being closer to Yosemite’s iconic sites. Many travelers split their nights: a few nights in Yosemite and one or two nights near Mono Lake or Mammoth for a diverse experience.
