Advice on a day trip to the Big Island?

I'm going to Hawaii for the first and probably only time next month and I'm trying to find out whether a day trip to see some highlights of the Big Island (volcanoes and petroglyphs for me) is feasible. We have a condo in Waikiki for the week but I'm thinking about a same day return flight and car rental to go to the Big Island. There are flights to and from Honolulu to either Kona or Hilo at around 6am and 9pm every day so in theory it seems possible.

Obviously I wouldn't have time for any substantial hikes but I'm finding conflicting information about how long the walk is to see different things along with a scenic drive. I don't have my heart set on any particular spot so alternative suggestions for volcano/lava and petroglyph viewing would be appreciated, plus any other ideas for quick stops on what would basically be a glorified driving tour.

A same-day trip from Oahu to the Big Island is technically feasible given early morning flights out of Honolulu and late evening flights back. However, it will be a very long day, and you’ll need to plan carefully to make the most of the time, especially if you want to see volcanoes, petroglyphs, and some scenic spots without doing any substantial hiking.

Here are some tips and considerations for planning your day:

  • Flights: Aim for the earliest outbound flight (around 6am) to maximize daylight on the Big Island. Book your return for the latest possible evening flight (around 9pm) to give yourself enough time to explore.
  • Car rental: Reserve a car at either Kona or Hilo airport in advance to avoid delays. Driving is essential to see multiple sites efficiently.
  • Big Island logistics: The Big Island is very large. Driving from Kona to Hilo or to Volcanoes National Park takes significant time, so prioritize which areas you want to see. Expect at least 1–2 hours of driving to reach main attractions from either airport.

Suggested itinerary options for a “glorified driving tour” without long hikes:

  • Volcano highlights: Visit Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park near Hilo. You can drive the Crater Rim Drive to see Kīlauea Iki Overlook, steam vents, and the Thurston Lava Tube. Most viewpoints are accessible with minimal walking.
  • Petroglyphs: Puako Petroglyph Archaeological Preserve or Puako Petroglyphs near the Kona side are easily accessible and require only a short, flat walk to view the carvings.
  • Scenic drives: Saddle Road (between Hilo and Kona) offers views of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. If you land in Kona, consider a drive along the Kohala Coast to see beaches, small towns, and lava fields.

Additional short stops to consider:

  • Rainbow Falls or Akaka Falls near Hilo (easy access and short walks)
  • South Point (Ka Lae), the southernmost tip of the U.S., if you are on the Kona side
  • Punaluu Black Sand Beach, especially if landing near Hilo

Tips for maximizing your day:

  • Pack light and bring snacks and water since your time is limited.
  • Start your day as early as possible and be mindful of airport and rental car times.
  • Prioritize the sites that matter most to you; it’s better to see fewer places well than rush through too many.

In summary, a day trip is possible but will be long and packed. Focus on drive-up viewpoints, short walks, and easily accessible attractions like petroglyphs and volcano viewpoints rather than long hikes.
