bru-pek / pek-icn , question regarding transfer
Hello,
I will be flying from BRU to PEK with Hainan Airlines which arrives in T2 and then my next flight which is in 5:30 hours departs from T3 with Asiana Airlines. I will need to re check in my luggage and transfer to T3. I will have 5 and half hours, will this time be sufficient? I have never traveled like this before so I would appreciate the help!
Hello, transferring between terminals at Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) with a layover of 5.5 hours is generally sufficient, but there are several steps and factors to consider to ensure a smooth connection, especially since you need to recheck your luggage.
Here’s a detailed breakdown:
- Arrival at Terminal 2: Upon landing with Hainan Airlines at T2, you will need to go through immigration and customs. Depending on the number of international arrivals, this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour.
- Luggage recheck: Since your next flight with Asiana Airlines departs from T3 and is not on the same booking, you will need to collect your checked luggage at T2 and recheck it at T3. Allocate at least 30–60 minutes for luggage collection and transfer.
- Terminal transfer: The airport provides a free shuttle bus between T2 and T3. The bus ride takes about 15–20 minutes, but allow extra time for waiting and boarding.
- Check-in at Terminal 3: International check-in counters usually open 3 hours before departure. As your layover is 5.5 hours, you should have enough time, but try to proceed to the counter as soon as possible after arriving at T3 to avoid queues.
- Security and boarding: After check-in, you will go through security and passport control for international departures. Allocate at least 45–60 minutes for these steps to ensure timely arrival at the gate.
Additional tips for a smooth transfer:
- Check in online with Asiana in advance if possible, but note that you still need to drop your luggage at T3.
- Follow airport signs for “Terminal Transfer” or ask airport staff for guidance; T2 and T3 are well-signposted and shuttle buses are frequent.
- Keep your boarding pass and passport handy during the transfer and check-in process.
- If you experience delays on arrival, inform Hainan Airlines or airport staff; they may assist in expediting luggage handling.
In summary, 5.5 hours is generally sufficient to transfer between PEK terminals, recheck luggage, and complete security, but prompt movement and awareness of timing are key. Allow buffer time for immigration and luggage collection, and head directly to T3 check-in as soon as possible to ensure a stress-free transfer.
