Looking to go to a Baseball game in August. We are from the UK so have no idea of the rules or customs but want to get the atmosphere and event. Is it worth going to the Tarpons (do they get a good crowd), or should we look at the Rays?
If you’re visiting Tampa from the UK and want to experience American baseball, both the Tampa Bay Rays (MLB) and the Tampa Tarpons (minor league) offer very different experiences.
Tampa Bay Rays:
The Rays play at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, which is about a 30-40 minute drive from downtown Tampa. This is Major League Baseball, so the level of play is top-notch. The stadium is large, so it can feel a bit spread out, but it’s perfect if you want the authentic professional game experience with a lively crowd, mascots, and the full MLB atmosphere.
Tampa Tarpons:
The Tarpons are a minor league team and play in Al Lang Stadium, also in St. Petersburg. The atmosphere is more intimate and family-friendly. Minor league games focus heavily on fun, with quirky promotions, games between innings, and smaller crowds. You’ll get a more casual experience and can get close to the action.
Recommendation: Since you want the atmosphere and to experience an authentic event, I’d recommend the Tampa Bay Rays if this is your only chance to see baseball in the US — the energy and professional environment are unmatched. If you’re looking for something fun, local, and interactive with a smaller crowd, the Tarpons are a great option, but keep in mind it won’t have the same intensity or level of play as MLB.
Either way, make sure to try classic ballpark foods like hot dogs, pretzels, nachos, and local craft beers if you’re over 21 — part of the fun is the food and snacks too!
