Secret places to swim in east glacier
We are traveling to glacier for 2 weeks. We will be at glacier lodge for 3 nights. One of the days we have nothing planned, which my kids hate. They are now 15, 16 18 and 19. We are hiking P and D one of the days. But one day we have nothing planned. Is there a secret waterfall we can hike to and maybe swim? Can someone help me with this day. We have been to east glacier twice before and other than hiking I don't know what to do over there, besides eat at that Mexican restaurant which I can't wait to do. No horseback riding though. Last year my wife got bucked off in Watertown area and broke her shoulder. It was terrible.
Thanks
Mike
It sounds like you have a wonderful trip ahead of you at Glacier National Park, and it’s great that you’re looking for something special to do with your kids during your free day in East Glacier. Given the beauty of the park and the surrounding area, there are a few hidden spots where you could enjoy swimming and a bit of adventure. Here are a few suggestions:
1. Secret Waterfalls and Swimming Spots
- Hidden Lake (from Logan Pass): While this is not entirely "secret," the hike to Hidden Lake is stunning, and it’s less crowded compared to some of the other popular hikes in the park. It’s a relatively easy 3-mile hike with incredible views, and if the weather is warm enough, you could take a dip in the cool, clear waters. However, it’s important to note that it can be quite chilly, especially in the higher elevations.
- Lake McDonald: Lake McDonald is a beautiful lake in the west side of the park, but it’s worth mentioning if you’re open to a short drive. It’s known for its crystal-clear waters and relatively easy access. While it’s not a "secret" swimming spot, the area is scenic and offers several beaches, some of which are less crowded. A swim in the cool waters of this lake can be refreshing after a day of hiking.
- Virginia Falls: A hidden gem located along the St. Mary Falls Trail, Virginia Falls is a bit off the beaten path, but it’s a fantastic spot for a swim if you’re willing to take a short hike. The waterfall itself is stunning, and the pool at the bottom is a great place for a dip, especially during the warmer summer months. Be cautious of the current, as it can be swift at times.
2. Other Fun Activities for the Day
- St. Mary Lake: If your family enjoys water activities like kayaking or paddleboarding, St. Mary Lake offers a peaceful and picturesque spot to spend the day. You can rent gear from the nearby boat rentals or simply enjoy the stunning views from the shore.
- Visit the Two Medicine Area: Two Medicine is a more remote area of the park, but it offers incredible views and a quieter experience. You could hike to Twin Falls or enjoy a picnic by the lake. It’s a great way to explore a less touristy side of the park. Swimming is not as common here, but the scenic beauty makes up for it.
3. Other Adventure Options
- Horseback Riding (If Your Wife is Open to It): While you mentioned no horseback riding after the incident last year, it might be worth checking out local options in East Glacier that offer gentler rides or maybe even a short, relaxing ride near the lodge to ease into it if your wife is open to it.
- Glacier National Park Visitor Centers: You could spend some time at the park’s visitor centers (like the one at St. Mary or the Apgar Village), which offer great exhibits and information about the park’s natural history. There are often guided ranger programs as well, which could be both fun and educational for your family.
Given that you've already visited East Glacier a couple of times, I’d recommend combining a peaceful hike with a chance to relax by a beautiful water spot—Virginia Falls or Hidden Lake would be great options if you want a "secret" feel with fewer crowds. Afterward, you can all unwind with a fun and tasty meal at that Mexican restaurant you’re excited about!
I hope this helps make your free day in East Glacier a bit more adventurous and memorable for you and your kids. Enjoy your trip!
