Wan'an Hydropower Station is located in Wan'an County, Jiangxi Province, China, in the middle reaches of the Ganjiang River, 90 kilometers from Ganzhou City. It is currently the largest hydroelectric power station in Jiangxi Province. The station is mainly used for power generation, but also has comprehensive benefits such as flood control, irrigation, aquaculture, and shipping. It is a hub for the north-south exchange of electricity in Jiangxi.
Wan'an Hydropower Station is located at the entrance of Wan'an Lake. The hydropower station dam is the first dam on the thousand-mile Ganjiang River. The dam is 1,104 meters long and 68 meters high. The reservoir controls an area of 36,900 square kilometers and has a total storage capacity of 2.216 billion cubic meters. The hydropower station gate is 140 meters high and 14 meters wide, known as the tallest gate in Asia. The first unit of the hydropower station began generating electricity in November 1990. In December 1992, all four units of the first phase of the project were put into production. It passed the national acceptance in January 1996.
The hydropower station now has an installed capacity of 530,000 kW and a total power generation of 17 billion kilowatt-hours. Party and state leaders have visited the hydropower plant to inspect its work. On July 6, 1990, Premier Li Peng inspected the hydropower station and wrote an inscription after his visit: "Develop the Gan River to benefit the people in the old revolutionary base areas."
The subtropical monsoon humid climate makes it suitable for travel in all four seasons.
