Use of Picaridan for No See ums

Sometime ago I read on this Forum about the use of Picaridan for No See Ums.I believe it was Zinfandel who recommended it. Does anyone have experience using this? Also, does anyone know if Sawyers is better than the Off brand?

Coming in 8 days for vacation and I really struggle with the bites, so want to try something new.

Picaridin is a highly effective insect repellent that many travelers use for biting midges (No-See-Ums) as well as mosquitoes. It is often recommended because it is less greasy than DEET, has a more pleasant smell, and is safe for use on children and adults. Many people report that it works well on Sanibel Island, especially during dawn and dusk when No-See-Ums are most active.

Some tips based on user experiences:

  • Apply Picaridin to all exposed skin and consider reapplying every few hours, especially after swimming or heavy sweating.
  • Clothing can also be treated lightly; some users find it reduces bites even through thin fabrics.
  • Combining Picaridin with physical barriers—such as long sleeves and pants during peak activity times—improves protection.

Regarding brands, Sawyer Picaridin tends to be preferred over generic/off-brand versions for a few reasons:

  • Sawyer is widely tested and generally provides the concentration advertised, usually 20% Picaridin which offers up to 12 hours of protection against mosquitoes and several hours against No-See-Ums.
  • Some off-brands may have slightly lower concentrations or inconsistent formulations, which can reduce effectiveness.
  • Spray vs. lotion: Sawyer offers both, and personal preference matters—sprays are easier to apply to clothing and larger areas, lotions may feel better on skin.

Other practical tips for Sanibel Island:

  • Use fine mesh screens or netting in outdoor dining areas if you plan to spend extended time outside.
  • Consider using Picaridin in combination with citronella candles or coils in the evenings for added protection.
  • Test a small patch first if you have sensitive skin, although most people tolerate Picaridin well.

Overall, Picaridin, particularly from Sawyer, is a solid choice for your upcoming vacation. Applying it consistently, especially during peak biting times, should make your trip more comfortable.
