What to do in Wuhan in an emergency
Our flight to Sydney was cancelled by China Eastern. We are in Wuhan at the Dorset for a couple of days. We have limited communication and access to funds. What can we do within walking distance. We have already walked the length of the walking street and done some shopping. Is there a ferry ride perhaps? We tried to get access to the river but it seemed impossible. We also don’t have access to email.
Being stuck in Wuhan due to a flight cancellation can be stressful, especially with limited communication and funds. Since you are staying at the Dorset and have already explored the nearby walking street, there are still some options within walking distance or a short walk for relaxation and sightseeing.
Nearby Activities and Sights:
- Yangtze River Riverside: Although access to ferries may be limited in some areas, you can walk along certain public riverfront sections near Jianghan Road or Hankou Riverside Park. These areas offer scenic views of the Yangtze and a chance to relax by the water.
- Hubu Alley Food Street: Even if funds are limited, walking along Hubu Alley to see the local street food scene can be entertaining. You may not buy much, but it gives a cultural experience and an opportunity to observe daily life.
- Wuhan Museum: Located near the city center, it may be a short walk or a brief taxi/ride away. Entry is free or very low cost, giving insight into local history and art.
- Parks near Dorset: Check if the hotel can guide you to nearby small parks or plazas for a relaxing walk, such as Jianghan Park or small riverside squares, which often have benches and public art.
- Window Shopping or Malls: Since you’ve walked the main shopping street, nearby malls or department stores can offer shelter, free Wi-Fi (sometimes), and air-conditioning, even if you just stroll around.
Practical Tips in an Emergency Situation:
- Ask the hotel reception for guidance—they may have access to local phone lines or ways to contact China Eastern, especially if you don’t have email access.
- Check if the hotel provides free internet access or a business center to help communicate with airlines or family.
- Keep cash in local currency for small purchases or taxis, and ask the hotel about nearby ATMs if you need funds.
- Always carry your passport with you when walking around the city, as police checks can occur.
- If you want a short ferry or river experience, the hotel can advise if public sightseeing ferries are operating along the Yangtze and nearby lakes, which may be accessible within walking distance or a short cab ride.
In summary, even with limited access and funds, you can enjoy walking along the riverfront, small parks, and cultural spots, or observe local street life at places like Hubu Alley. The hotel staff will be your best resource for practical solutions and temporary connectivity while waiting for your flight rescheduling.
