Oysters?

Hi, We will be coming to Ft. Walton this weekend and staying through next week and I should have asked sooner. Are there any hole in the wall places to get raw oysters? My husband is one who is leary of eating them when there is no R in the month...and we are real close to MAY. Where would be a place he'd feel safe eating them? Thanks!!! Also, any recommendations on seafood that aren't the 'touristy' places would be appreciated.

If you’re looking for fresh, safe oysters in Fort Walton Beach, especially as you approach May, there are several reputable spots and local favorites where your husband can feel comfortable eating raw oysters. While traditional advice is to eat oysters in months with an “R,” modern refrigeration and sourcing make oysters generally safe year-round when served at trusted establishments.

Here are some recommended places for raw oysters and local seafood:

  • Marina Cafe – Located near the waterfront, this spot is known for high-quality oysters and a casual, local vibe. They prioritize freshness and sourcing from trusted Gulf suppliers.
  • Shenanigans Irish Pub & Grill – While it has a lively atmosphere, the oysters here are well-regarded and they maintain strict safety standards.
  • Old Bay Steamer – A classic local seafood place with fresh Gulf oysters. It’s casual and frequented by locals rather than tourists.

For other local, non-touristy seafood options:

  • The Crab Trap – Known for Gulf seafood, including steamed crabs and shrimp, with a laid-back atmosphere.
  • Flounder’s Chowder House – Offers fresh catches of the day, oysters, and Gulf specialties, popular with locals more than tourists.
  • Vue on 30A – Slightly upscale, but serves fresh Gulf seafood and has excellent reviews for oysters and seafood platters.

Tips for eating oysters safely in Fort Walton Beach:

  • Ask the staff about the source and harvest date of the oysters—they should be able to provide this information easily.
  • Stick to well-reviewed and busy local spots; turnover is key for freshness.
  • If in doubt, try cooked oysters (steamed, baked, or grilled) to enjoy the flavor without any risk.

Overall, there are several trusted local spots where your husband can enjoy oysters safely, and the area has plenty of hidden gems for fresh, authentic Gulf seafood beyond the usual tourist spots.
