Lassen Volcanic N.P. road conditions in June ?

I would really love to spend 1-2 days in LVNP, perhaps 2nd week of June. I understand no one can predict the weather, but I was hoping someone could give me some advice. Is route 89 generally open ?? Bumpass Hell trail open ? I want to be able to drive through the park and explore the area. Is LVNP worthwhile in early June ? (We were supposed to explore this area last summer, but needed to cancel due to fires in vicinity? Any advice would be helpful, as I expect to book a night in Chester.

Lassen Volcanic National Park in early June can be a wonderful visit, but there are a few important considerations for road access and trail conditions due to lingering snow and seasonal closures.

Road Conditions:

  • Route 89 is the main north-south route through the park and usually opens in late May to early June, but snowdrifts can occasionally delay full access, especially to higher elevation areas.
  • The park’s main road network connecting Manzanita Lake, Lassen Peak, and Bumpass Hell is typically open by the 2nd week of June, though some parking lots may be partially snow-covered or limited.
  • Always check the official National Park Service (NPS) Lassen Volcanic website or call the park’s visitor center for current road and parking conditions before your trip.

Bumpass Hell Trail:

  • This is one of the park’s most popular geothermal trails and usually opens in early June, but snow may still be present on parts of the trail or in the parking area, requiring sturdy shoes and caution.
  • The trail is about 3 miles round-trip with some moderate elevation gain, and it leads to bubbling mud pots, fumaroles, and steaming vents—well worth the visit if accessible.

Other Trail and Park Considerations:

  • Lower elevation trails, like those near Manzanita Lake and Loomis Museum, are generally accessible and provide scenic views of Lassen Peak and the surrounding forest.
  • High elevation hikes, including Lassen Peak summit, may still have snow, and proper footwear and layers are recommended.
  • Wildlife is active in early June, and spring blooms make the park especially picturesque.

Tips for a 1-2 Day Visit:

  • Stay in Chester for easy access to the northwest entrance.
  • Arrive early to maximize daylight and avoid limited parking at popular trailheads.
  • Check the daily weather forecast and be prepared for sudden changes, as mountain weather can be unpredictable.
  • Bring snacks, water, and extra layers, especially for higher elevation areas.

In summary, Lassen Volcanic NP is definitely worthwhile in early June if you enjoy geothermal features, mountain scenery, and relatively quiet trails. Some snow may restrict access to the highest elevations, but lower and mid-elevation areas are typically fully enjoyable.
