Grab a late night bite at BGR

We arrive on a Sat. night at 9pm. Picking up a car to drive to BH. I would love to know what our options are for a late night snack/meal. I imagine I can order some pizzas and beers to come to our inn, but if we're ravenous after our flight, will we be able to get something to eat at the airport before we start our drive? From first glance, it looks like restaurants close very early. What do you all think? Thank you.

Welcome to Mount Desert Island! It’s great that you’re planning to explore Bar Harbor. While the island has a relaxed pace, especially at night, there are still a few options for a late-night snack or meal, even if you're arriving later than most places close.

Late-Night Options at the Airport:

If you’re flying into Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB), it’s a small regional airport, and most airport facilities close fairly early. However, there may still be limited options for snacks or drinks, but don't expect a full meal service at this time of night. It’s a good idea to check with the airport before your arrival to see if any vendors are open late, though generally, it’s not the most reliable option for food after hours.

Late-Night Eats in Bar Harbor:

Bar Harbor does tend to wind down earlier than larger cities, but you’ll still have some options if you're hungry after arriving at 9 PM. Here are some places to consider for a late-night bite:

  • Pat's Pizza: Known for being open later (often until midnight), Pat's Pizza in Bar Harbor is a great casual spot for a late-night pizza. You can also order for delivery if you want to eat at your inn.
  • The Doghouse: This local late-night option serves up great hot dogs, burgers, and sandwiches. It’s a casual, fun place to grab a quick bite if you want something simple and satisfying after your flight.
  • McKay's Public House: McKay's is a good option for a later meal, especially if you want to enjoy a drink and some food in a cozy atmosphere. They typically serve food until around 10 PM, so if you arrive before closing time, this might be a great spot to unwind.
  • Blaze: Pizza & Tap: Located in the heart of Bar Harbor, this place is known for its excellent pizza and craft beer. While they typically close around 9 PM, it’s worth checking out if you’re just getting to town.
  • Bar Harbor Cellars: If you’re in the mood for a drink but not necessarily a full meal, this local winery often offers wine tastings and snacks until later, depending on the season.

Food Delivery Options:

If you find the town is quieter than expected and you’re craving something more substantial, food delivery might be a great solution. Many pizza places and local restaurants in Bar Harbor offer delivery, so you can have pizza, burgers, or other comfort food brought directly to your inn. Some options to consider:

  • Pat's Pizza
  • Leary's Landing Irish Pub for a mix of pub food and snacks.

What to Expect:

In general, Bar Harbor restaurants do close fairly early (around 9-10 PM), especially outside of peak summer months. However, it’s a relaxed town with a vibrant summer atmosphere, so as long as you're okay with a more casual, laid-back option, you'll find a few places open later for a snack or meal.

If you’re planning to drive to your accommodation in Bar Harbor, I’d recommend calling ahead to see if there are any food delivery options or ordering in advance so you can enjoy your meal as soon as you arrive. That way, you won't have to worry about finding food late at night.
