May 8 & 9 drones being used by Hawaiian (Maui) Electric

Aloha

If you are here now you may notice drones doing inspections today and tomorrow in the Napili, Kula & Puukolii areas. Puukolii is and area inland of Kaanapali Beach. No beaches or recreational areas will be closed.

Employees on the ground may request access to properties, but not into homes or businesses as part of this project to inspect power lines and poles. We hope they inspect their fire breaks and have them cleared of trees and vegetation.

This is scheduled from 8am til 3pm weather permitting.

the Getaways

Aloha! If you are in Maui, specifically in the Napili, Kula, and Puukolii areas, you may notice that Hawaiian Electric is conducting drone inspections on May 8 and 9. This project involves using drones to inspect power lines and poles as part of routine maintenance and fire-prevention measures.

The inspections are scheduled to occur between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., weather permitting, so drone activity should be visible during these hours. While drones will be operating overhead, no beaches, parks, or recreational areas will be closed, so normal outdoor activities can continue without interruption.

Hawaiian Electric employees may be present on the ground near properties and may request access to areas adjacent to the power lines. However, it is important to note:

  • They will not enter homes or businesses during this project.
  • The inspections are focused on power infrastructure and fire break management, including checking for trees and vegetation that may need clearing to reduce fire risk.

For residents or visitors in these areas:

  • Expect to see drones and possibly vehicles or crews along roads and near utility poles.
  • Normal property access and daily activities should largely remain unaffected.
  • If approached by Hawaiian Electric employees, they may request brief access to adjacent outdoor areas for inspection purposes.

Overall, this project is part of Hawaiian Electric’s ongoing efforts to maintain safe and reliable electrical service and mitigate fire hazards. There is no expected disruption to beaches, parks, or other recreational areas, so visitors can continue to enjoy their activities without concern.

Mahalo and aloha,

Stay aware of crews and drones but no major changes to your plans are necessary during these inspection days.
