Thoughts on travelling in June please

Hi,

Looking at spending 8 days in Zhangjiajie region around 7 June. Is that time considered peak season / school holidays? All the reviews I am reading say the masses of people is unbearable. Alternately I could go to kunming & Lijiang.

Open to suggestions.

Fingers crossed it doesn’t rain too much either.

Thanks in advance

Visiting Zhangjiajie in early June can be a mixed experience. June is not the absolute peak tourist season like National Day (October) or Chinese New Year, but it coincides with the start of the summer holidays for schools in China, so you may see an increase in domestic travelers, particularly on weekends. The weather in June is generally warm and humid, with occasional rain, which can make some trails slippery but also enhances the lush greenery of the area.

Some points to consider for Zhangjiajie in June:

  • Expect moderate crowds at popular spots like the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, Tianzi Mountain, and the Glass Bridge, especially in the morning or late afternoon.
  • Early morning visits are highly recommended to avoid the largest crowds and to enjoy the misty landscapes, which are particularly beautiful.
  • Rain is possible, so waterproof clothing and good hiking shoes are advisable. Check local weather forecasts before heading out each day.
  • Booking accommodations and transportation in advance is a good idea due to the higher domestic tourist traffic.

As an alternative, Kunming and Lijiang in Yunnan offer different advantages in June:

  • Kunming is known as the "Spring City," with pleasant, mild weather almost year-round, so June is generally comfortable for sightseeing.
  • Lijiang offers a mix of cultural experiences in the old town and natural beauty in nearby Tiger Leaping Gorge and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Early summer can be busy but usually less intense than Zhangjiajie.
  • Yunnan region tends to have fewer domestic tourists compared to Zhangjiajie in early summer, which may provide a more relaxed experience.

Overall, if you are okay with some crowds and prefer stunning natural scenery, Zhangjiajie is still worthwhile. If you prefer a slightly more relaxed itinerary with comfortable weather and cultural immersion, Kunming and Lijiang could be better options in June.
