Car Break-in's!

Hi, we are just finalising our trip! We are driving from LA to Vegas and had planned to stop at Peggy Sue's but have since heard of car break-ins there? Not sure how true this is? Would people recommend somewhere else safer to stop on route for food/break? Thanks!

Hi! It’s smart to be cautious about stops between LA and Vegas, especially since some well-known roadside spots have reports of car break-ins, though they may not be widespread. Peggy Sue’s Diner near Yermo has historically been a popular stop and there have been anecdotal reports of vehicle break-ins in the parking area, particularly for cars left unattended with visible valuables inside. While not every visit results in issues, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

If you’re looking for safer alternatives to stop for food or a break on the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, here are some options:

  • Baker, CA: Baker is a small town about halfway to Vegas. You’ll find fast food, gas stations, and some local diners. Baker is frequented by travelers so the parking areas are generally busier, which can reduce risk.
  • Barstow, CA: Barstow is a larger city with plenty of chain restaurants, malls, and gas stations. Stopping here gives you access to secured parking lots and restrooms, and it’s a popular hub for travelers so visibility is good.
  • Primm, NV: Just over the California-Nevada border, Primm has casinos, fast food, and a few hotel options. Parking is generally monitored, and it’s a safe place for a short break before continuing to Vegas.
  • Rest Areas: Caltrans maintains several rest areas along I-15 where you can safely pull over, stretch, and use facilities. These areas are patrolled and tend to have constant vehicle turnover, which can deter opportunistic theft.

Tips for safety wherever you stop:

  • Always lock your car and remove or hide valuables from plain sight (bags, electronics, wallets, etc.).
  • Park in well-lit, busy areas if possible.
  • Consider using chain restaurant or gas station parking lots with surveillance cameras for short stops.

Bottom line: While Peggy Sue’s Diner is iconic and fun, if peace of mind is a priority, consider stopping in Barstow or Baker instead. You can still enjoy local diners and amenities safely, without compromising your belongings during the drive to Vegas.
