Transportation in the Keys
We are trying to stay away from renting a car.
Considering a bus, but I've been told recently that from Miami to Key Largo uber costs may be comparable for two people.
Then on another day we'll need to get to Key West (downtown) from Key Largo. The same person is telling me that if I factor in uber costs to the bus station in Key Largo, uber from bus drop off in Key West to the hotel... it'll add up, so maybe just straight uber will be better. Not even factoring the time.
What are your'all thoughts? Anybody knows ballpark prices for uber?
If there were things like BlaBlaCcar in Europe, that'd really be the best solution, but I can't find anything like that. Is there?
Getting around the Florida Keys without a rental car can be done, but it requires some planning. The Keys are long and spread out, so transportation options are more limited compared to mainland Florida.
Here’s a breakdown of your options and considerations:
- Uber/Lyft: From Miami to Key Largo, Uber fares can range from $120-$180 depending on traffic and time of day. For two people, this is roughly comparable to taking the bus, but it’s private and more convenient.
- Bus: The Key West Transit (Keys Shuttle or Greyhound) runs from Miami to Key Largo and onward to Key West. Prices are generally $30-$35 per person to Key Largo, and around $50-$60 to Key West. The downside is the need to adhere to the schedule, and additional Uber/Lyft rides may be needed to reach your accommodations from bus stops.
- Combination (Bus + Uber/Lyft): If you take the bus to Key Largo and then an Uber from Key Largo to your Key West hotel, costs may add up to $100-$150 per person. This could end up being similar or higher than a direct Uber ride.
Other options:
- Shuttle services: Some private shuttle companies operate between Miami and Key West. These can be more expensive than the bus but offer door-to-door service.
- Car rentals for a day: If you are only moving once or twice, a one-day car rental could be cost-effective, especially if you plan multiple stops along the Keys.
- Rideshare alternatives: Unlike Europe’s BlaBlaCar, there isn’t a widely used long-distance rideshare app in the U.S. for intercity travel. Most people rely on Uber, Lyft, buses, or shuttles.
Summary: For convenience and minimal hassle, a direct Uber or Lyft from Miami to Key Largo or Key West may be the most straightforward option, even if slightly more expensive. If cost is your main concern, the bus is cheaper but requires more coordination and potentially additional rides once you arrive.
