Key Largo or Islamorada?

Hi all

We are a couple in our 50s looking at spending 5 nights in Florida Keys to possibly tie in with an NFL game in Miami. After doing a bit of research, I'm drawn to Key Largo but have found accommodation I like on Islamorada. Just can't seem to find as much info about this area.

Can anyone offer pros and cons of Key Largo and Islamorada please? Main consideration would be nice and peaceful, beach time and some snorkeling.

All opinions gratefully received.

Thanks in advance 😊

Choosing between Key Largo and Islamorada depends on the type of experience you want in the Florida Keys. Both offer beautiful scenery, access to snorkeling, and opportunities for relaxation, but they have different vibes and amenities.

Key Largo:

  • Known as the “Diving Capital of the World,” it has easy access to popular snorkeling and diving spots like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
  • Offers a variety of accommodations, from resorts to smaller inns, often with more budget-friendly options compared to Islamorada.
  • Less upscale and a bit busier in terms of tourist traffic along the main highway areas, but still peaceful in resort zones.
  • Good choice if you want convenient access to Miami and planning side trips to the mainland or the Everglades.

Islamorada:

  • Known for a more laid-back, upscale Keys experience, often considered quieter and more peaceful than Key Largo.
  • Beautiful waters, excellent snorkeling, and sportfishing opportunities, with several private and semi-private beaches.
  • Accommodations tend to be higher-end and more resort-focused, with fewer budget options but better for a romantic or relaxed stay.
  • Small-town charm with less commercial hustle, making it ideal for a peaceful retreat with scenic views and local dining experiences.

Additional considerations:

  • If your main priority is snorkeling and diving, Key Largo may be slightly more convenient with more organized tour operators and easy access to reefs.
  • If peace, privacy, and a slightly more upscale, intimate experience are what you’re after, Islamorada is a better fit.
  • Both locations allow day trips down the Keys, so you could base in one and visit the other if you have a rental car.

In short, for couples in their 50s seeking a nice, peaceful stay with beach time and snorkeling, Islamorada tends to provide a quieter and more scenic experience, while Key Largo offers convenience, diving options, and slightly more varied accommodations.
