We are visiting Maine in early June. Heading up to Bar Harbor for a couple of days, then driving south to Portland. We have 2 days before we leave - any recommendations of what to do and where to stay?
It sounds like you're planning a lovely trip to Maine, with time to explore both Bar Harbor and Portland! Since you have two days left before you leave, here are a few suggestions for things to do and places to stay between Bar Harbor and Portland:
1. Kennebunkport - A charming coastal town south of Portland, Kennebunkport offers beautiful beaches, great dining, and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing. You can explore the lovely Dock Square for shops and cafes, or enjoy the scenic drive along Ocean Avenue with views of the Atlantic. Consider stopping by the Cape Porpoise Lighthouse for a picturesque photo op. Kennebunkport also has some fantastic seafood options, and it's a relaxing place to spend a few hours.
2. Freeport - If you enjoy shopping, Freeport is home to the famous L.L. Bean flagship store, and it offers several other outlet shopping opportunities. Beyond shopping, you can visit the Desert of Maine, an unusual glacial formation that offers a unique experience in the midst of Maine’s otherwise lush landscape. It's a great spot to stretch your legs and explore the natural beauty of the area.
3. Popham Beach State Park - Located about 45 minutes south of Portland, Popham Beach offers a quiet, scenic spot to enjoy the beach. It's less crowded than some of Maine's other coastal spots, and the views of the ocean are spectacular. You can take a leisurely walk along the beach, or if you're up for a bit of adventure, head to the nearby Fox Island and visit the historic Fox Island Lighthouse.
4. Portland Head Light and Cape Elizabeth - If you haven't yet explored Portland, you can't miss the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth. This iconic lighthouse is one of the most photographed in the country and offers stunning views of the coastline. The surrounding Fort Williams Park is a great place to walk, picnic, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. It’s also a good place to relax and reflect before your trip concludes.
5. Old Orchard Beach - If you have time for a quick seaside stop, head to Old Orchard Beach for a taste of Maine's beachside fun. It’s a lively spot with an amusement park, shops, and restaurants, but still has a more laid-back atmosphere than some of the larger tourist hubs. You can stroll the pier, watch the sunset, or enjoy a casual seafood dinner with a view of the ocean.
As for where to stay:
For your two days, the key is to balance relaxation and sightseeing, so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Maine while also experiencing some of its iconic coastal towns. Enjoy your trip!
