Boston to Maine
Hello! We are new into planning a trip in June. We plan to fly in to take In a game at Fenway then spend the rest of our trip in Maine. Would love suggestions for the best experience to see the beauty of Maine. We will have 7 days and so far Fenway and Acadia are our only objectives. We haven’t booked plane tickets yet either so open to airport suggestions.
It sounds like you’re in for an exciting trip! Spending time in both Boston and Maine offers a wonderful mix of city excitement and natural beauty. With 7 days in total, there’s plenty of time to explore both Fenway and Acadia, and add some other iconic Maine experiences as well. Here’s a suggested itinerary to make the most out of your trip:
Airport Options:
For your flight into Boston, Logan International Airport (BOS) is the most convenient option, especially if you plan to watch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. It’s located just a short distance from downtown Boston and Fenway. If you plan to spend time in Maine afterward, there are a few good options for traveling between Boston and Maine:
- Logan International (BOS) – Convenient for Fenway and easily accessible by public transport or taxi.
- Portland International Jetport (PWM) – If you want to explore southern Maine first (Portland, Kennebunkport, etc.), this is a good option. It’s a short flight or a 1.5-2 hour drive from Boston.
Suggested 7-Day Maine Itinerary:
Here's a sample 7-day itinerary, balancing iconic sights and beautiful Maine experiences:
- Day 1-2: Boston (Fenway & City Exploration)
- Start your trip in Boston with a visit to Fenway Park. Take a tour of this historic ballpark if you’re not attending a game.
- Explore Boston’s historical neighborhoods: the Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, and the North End.
- If you’re a fan of seafood, enjoy a meal at Quincy Market or explore seafood restaurants on the waterfront.
- Day 3: Drive to Portland
- Portland is about a 1.5-hour drive from Boston and is known for its vibrant food scene and coastal beauty.
- Visit the Portland Head Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in America.
- Stroll around the Old Port district with its cobblestone streets and boutique shops.
- Consider visiting some local breweries like Allagash Brewing Company or Bissell Brothers Brewing Company.
- Day 4: Explore the Maine Coast – Kennebunkport & Ogunquit
- Head south from Portland and visit Kennebunkport, famous for its charming streets and scenic coastal views.
- Spend the afternoon in Ogunquit, known for its beautiful beaches, and consider walking along the Marginal Way coastal trail.
- Day 5-6: Acadia National Park
- Drive to Acadia National Park (about 3 hours from Portland). Acadia is one of the most beautiful parks in the country, with its rugged coastline, hiking trails, and incredible views from Cadillac Mountain.
- Hike some of the popular trails like Jordan Pond Path or Precipice Trail (if you're up for a challenge).
- Don’t miss a drive along the Park Loop Road and stop at the iconic Thunder Hole to hear the waves crash against the rocks.
- If you're into wildlife, keep an eye out for bald eagles, moose, and seals.
- Day 7: Bar Harbor
- Spend your last day exploring Bar Harbor, the gateway town to Acadia National Park. It has charming shops, great seafood, and a laid-back atmosphere.
- If you have time, take a boat tour to explore the nearby islands or take a whale watching cruise.
Additional Suggestions:
While Acadia and Portland are two must-see destinations, here are a few other places you might want to consider visiting during your Maine trip:
- Camden – A picturesque coastal town with a lovely harbor and some great hiking opportunities at Camden Hills State Park.
- Rockport & Rockland – Known for its art galleries and the Maine Lobster Festival (if you visit in late July or early August).
Final Tips:
- June is a fantastic time to visit Maine, with warm weather and less crowded than peak summer months. However, it can still get a bit chilly in coastal areas, so bring layers.
- If you're flying into Boston, consider renting a car for the Maine portion of your trip. Maine is best explored by car, as many of its scenic and natural attractions are spread out.
With 7 days, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy both the city excitement of Boston and the natural beauty of Maine. Enjoy your trip!
