LAX using passages behind security

Hopefully someone has experience of this.

I have been looking at a few sites about getting from TBIT to terminal 1, just so I understand correctly, As I have cases to collect I will not be able to stay in the secure area and will need to catch the bus or use the external walkway?

Thanks in advance

At LAX, the terminals are not fully connected behind security, so your understanding is correct. If you need to collect checked luggage at Terminal 1 after arriving at TBIT (Tom Bradley International Terminal), you will exit the secure area and will not be able to use the airside passageways that connect terminals beyond security.

Here’s how it works:

  • After landing at TBIT, proceed to baggage claim to collect any checked luggage. This will require leaving the secure area.
  • To get from TBIT to Terminal 1 with your luggage, you can use the LAX “Airline Shuttle” (commonly called the “LAX Shuttle B”) that runs frequently between all terminals. This shuttle is curb-to-curb, free of charge, and outside security.
  • Walking between TBIT and Terminal 1 is possible via the pedestrian walkway outside the terminal, but it is longer and involves navigating traffic areas, so the shuttle is generally easier and safer with luggage.

Additional notes:

  • Once you reach Terminal 1, you will need to check in for your next flight and go through security again.
  • If you are connecting on an international flight from TBIT, some airlines offer a baggage transfer service, but since you specifically mentioned collecting cases, you will be handling your luggage yourself.

In short, there is no behind-security passage from TBIT to Terminal 1 for passengers collecting luggage. The free airport shuttle or the external walkway are your options to move between terminals.
